What Chemical Will Kill Fire Ants

Fire ants are one of the most aggressive species of ants. They feed on plants and animals and are known for their harsh, multiple stings. Infestations can be treated with chemicals such as ant baits and dusts. Does this Spark an idea?


Fire ants


Types


According to Oklahoma State University's Entomology and Plant Pathology department, chemicals found in fire ant baits include hydramethylnol, a slow-acting poison, and fenoxycarb and avermectin, which are growth regulators that target the queen. These combined chemicals will kill the ant mound within one to five weeks.


Baits


Fire ant baits contain corn grits that are coated with soybean oil as part of their active ingredients. The ants enter to feed, and ingest the insecticides.


Dust


Acephate is a dust that is poured around ant mounds. Fire ants walk through the dust outside the mound; with the substance coating their bodies, they bring it inside.


Warning


Wear gloves to prevent your skin from coming in contact with the chemicals.


Prevention/Solution


Apply baits to areas where the fire ants collect their food, suggests the OSU website. To find those areas, put food a few feet from the mound. Continue to place food at larger distances away, and observe ant activities to see where they feed.

Use Essential Oils As Sunscreen

Using Essential and Massage Oil as a Sunscreen


1. Buy only sesame oil that is specifically designed to be used for massage. This oil has been specially refined and prepared for use on the skin. You can get it at health food stores and online. Don’t use cooking sesame oil, as this is a different grade of oil and often has a strong odor.


2. Measure a portion of the sesame oil into an easy-carry plastic bottle with a cap. The oil usually comes in larger sizes, such as 1-quart bottles and 1-gallon jugs, so using the smaller bottle makes it easier to carry and use.


3. Blend in one or two of the following essential oils to add insect-repellant qualities to your sesame sunscreen oil, if desired: cedarwood, clove, lavender, peppermint, rosemary and thyme. Use only 100 percent pure essential oils, as only these offer healthful benefits. The label will state "100 percent pure." Add three drops of essential oil per teaspoon of sesame oil. Shake well.


4. Gently massage and spread the oil all over the exposed parts of your body -- including your neck, face and ears -- just as you would with suntan lotion. Avoid getting the oil into your eyes or mouth.


5. Reapply sesame-oil sunscreen after contact with water or after perspiring heavily.

Feed Stabilized Rice Bran To Horses

3. Increase the amount by 1/4 lb. over two weeks until you reach the desired amount. Feed a maximum of 2 lbs. of rice bran per day.


4. Store the rice brain in a metal or plastic container to keep rodents out of the feed.

Natural Soapmaking Supplies

Making natural soap as a hobby or as a business can be done from home using basic kitchen supplies on hand. Natural soap-making supplies and kits are also readily available for purchase. A variety of natural soap-making options are available if you are interested in making soap. Soap supplies and suppliers, creative ideas for new ingredient combinations, molds, emollients and decorative accents are readily available today.


Basic Processes


When making natural soap, it is necessary to decide which process you will be using, in order to determine what basic supplies and equipment you will need to get started.


For soap crafters, there are three basic processes. The first is one of the easiest and is called the "melt and pour" method. The second method is one of the more popular methods for soapiers and is called the "cold process." The third and final method, which is a more traditional method of making soap, is called the "hot process."


Kits


Soap-making kits come preassembled with the most basic supplies needed to create soap, and usually include glycerin, a mold and essential oils for scent. With kits, you may find that the only equipment of your own you need to supply is a glass bowl, a spatula, and a microwave for ease of melting the glycerin. This is what is referred to as the basic "melt and pour" method.


Kits are available in craft stores; local discount stores in their craft and hobby aisles; and online.


Basic Equipment and Supplies


Basic soap-making equipment that is essential if you are not using a kit includes glass bowls, spatulas, molds, a thermometer, mask, gloves, goggles for safety and the soap ingredients themselves. A useful set of instructions at hand is also essential. Online video tutorials and guides help.


Non-coated metal baking pans that you already own can be used as economical molds, when making larger batches of soap that will be later cut into cakes or bars.


Basic Ingredient Supplies


The basic soap-making ingredient supplies needed for making natural soap are fats and oils, lye, fragrance and some sort of emulsifier.


Glycerine, olive oil and vegetable and animal fats are the most common types of fats and oils. The fats and oils provide the soothing and skin-softening essentials of soap. Essential oils are typically used for fragrance and scenting the soap. Oatmeal; natural grains and nuts; and fruit peels and rinds can be used for emulsifiers as well as scenting compounds. Wood-burning lye or lye from bracken ashes is common as a basic ingredient in soap-making.


Creative Supply Ideas


People have purchased natural beef and buffalo fat from the local market or butcher for use in soap-making, and lye from the local gardening center. Combining ingredients with plants and herbs can create beautiful natural homemade soaps. Adding butters as well as salts for scrubs and emulsifiers gives your natural soap new form and texture. Old bars of soap can be recycled to make new soap bars.

Detect Gmo

Effects of GMO consumption are unknown, but some consumers are concerned.


Advances in food manufacturing make it possible to farmers and produce more food faster. However, some of the advances are due to the genetic modification of foods. A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is a plant, animal or microorganism with altered genetics, often by being infused with the DNA of another species with which the original species would not normally reproduce. Though side-affects due to consumption of GMOs are not yet proven, many people are concerned about possible health issues that may result in the future. At the same time, many people are unaware of the prevalence of GMOs and would not know identify GMOs -- even if they were.


Instructions


1. Look at the PLU code sticker on your produce. Count the number of digits in the code. Look for four-digit codes, because this indicates the produce was grown conventionally -- with additives. Look for five-digit codes to find GMOs. Those starting with an 8 are organically grown, and codes starting with 9 are GMOs.


2. Purchase foods that do not contain soy, corn, cottonseed or canola as they are often top GMOs.


3. Buy your meats and produce from local farmers and ask how the food is produced.


4. Buy organic foods, because they are never GMOs.

The Difference Between Whole and Peeled Legumes

Because soy and other dry beans make up such a huge percentage of food produced worldwide, it is especially important to push for legume growers to grow organic beans. Therefore, eating organic beans is better, of not on an individual level, then on an environmental level.


Local, Organic Legumes Taste Best


Organic foods often taste better than conventional foods, but that may be because they are more often locally distributed than conventional foods, and therefore fresher. The best way to guarantee a good flavor in legumes, especially fresh legumes, is to get them from a local farmer's market. Plus, standing face-to-face with the farmer, you can find out if the legumes were grown with or without toxic chemicals, bypassing the need to rely on the sometimes unreliable label "organic."

Easy Skin Cream Recipe


This recipe is deceptively simple yet results in a rich moisturizing body cream. Mix 1/2 cup Shea butter, 1/4 cup olive oil, 2 tsp. Vitamin E oil and 6 drops of essential oil of your choice with an electric mixer until well mixed and creamy. The Vitamin E oil acts as a preservative. The essential oil is for fragrance and can be left out if an unscented skin cream is preferred. Suggested essential oils would be lavender or rose geranium. Store the cream in an airtight container in a cool place.


Winter Skin Cream Recipe


Some skin creams and lotions are made up of water and oil. The trick to making them blend and stay together is to add an emulsifier to the recipe. Liquid lecithin is an excellent one that can be found at health food stores. Place 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup jojoba oil, 1 tbsp. liquid lecithin, 2 tsp. Vitamin E oil and 6 to 10 drops of essential oil of your choice into a blender. Geranium oil is good for dry skin. Blend on high until it reaches a rich, creamy consistency. Sweet almond oil or olive oil can be substituted for the jojoba oil in this recipe. Store it in an airtight container. This skin cream needs to be stored in a cool place or the refrigerator.


Eye Cream


The eye area is delicate and light oils should be used to make creams for this skin area. Try this simple recipe of 1 tbsp. light organic sesame oil, 3 tbsp. aloe vera gel and 2 drops of Vitamin E oil. Place the ingredients into a small glass jar with a lid. Screw on the top and shake vigorously until well blended. The results should be creamy. When selecting aloe vera gel, check the label to insure that the product is 100 percent aloe vera.

With online phone books, "people search" directories and social networking services such as MySpace and Facebook, finding people in the computer era has become arguably easier than it was before the days of the Internet. In addition to the abberations in directory locations and structures you can expect in a different country, your facility (or, in many cases, lack thereof) in Italian may affect your confidence as you try to find someone -- but you shouldn't let it.

A Job Description For A Culinary R&D Project Manager

A R&D manager for the culinary section of a restaurant or food manufacturing company works to improve the food quality the company produces for its customers. The R&D manager identifies opportunities to improve existing processes or products or by introducing new ones. This position also requires innovative thinking to generate new ideas for improvement. The R&D manager needs good people skills to work with project planning and execution, and a willingness to keep pace with changing knowledge.


Process/Product Development Responsibilities


The culinary R&D manager creates new recipes and food items to feature in regular and special menus for customers. R&D managers alter ingredients and recipe formulations to make existing menu options tastier for customers. Managers also ensure process efficiency in the food department and develop new processes or implement improvements in existing processes. Based on inputs from the food department, R&D managers develop new ideas for process and product improvement, and ensure improvement compliance with organization's food, safety and budget standards with interdepartmental assistance. R&D managers prepare project plans describing project objectives, resources required and phases of execution.


Supervisory Role


R&D managers lead teams on product or process development. Job duties involve monitoring and ensuring process and equipment efficiency of the food department. R&D managers help maintain hygienic conditions in the food department and conduct audits to assess food safety and quality compliance and reports discrepancies to management.


Evaluation Duties


The R&D manager monitors customer feedback and project costs including labor, equipment and other resources involved, to assess the profits made by the new project. She evaluates existing food equipment and procedures regularly for efficiency and recommends changes, such as upgraded equipment or implementing new technologies for procedural improvements.


Other Duties


In testing new processes or products, the R&D manager maintains accurate paperwork describing the purpose of testing, and activities undertaken for testing such as procedures and equipment used. Make Homemade Soap

This soap is a pleasure to give - and to receive.


Instructions


Soap Making 101


1. Dissolve 12 oz. lye in 32 oz. softened water in a plastic or glass bowl. If at all possible, do this outside or under an exhaust fan.


2. Add the lye to the water, not vice versa. Pour the lye slowly and in a steady stream, and stir constantly with a plastic spoon.


3. Set the mixture aside to cool. The mixture will heat up considerably due to the lye reacting with fats in the oils. This is called saponification.


4. Melt 24 oz. coconut oil and 38 oz. solid vegetable shortening in a stainless steel pot.


5. Add 25 oz. olive oil (not virgin) and any fragrance oils you want to use.


6. Allow the oils to cool.


7. Grease the soap mold with Crisco.


8. When both the oil and lye mixtures have cooled to room temperature, slowly combine them, adding the lye to the oils.


9. Stir slowly and constantly. If you see bubbles, stir more slowly.


10. Drizzle the soap into the pot once in a while. When it keeps its shape momentarily before sinking into the rest of the mix (tracing), it's time to add whatever extras you want.


11. Stir your botanicals, grains and coloring into a cup of soap taken from the mix.


12. Combine that back into the original mixture.


13. Pour the soap into the mold.


14. Wrap the mold in a towel and leave it undisturbed for 18 hours. The soap mixture will heat up and then cool down. Avoid uncovering it until it's cooled.


15. Allow the soap to sit in the uncovered mold for another 12 hours.


16. Loosen the sides by wiggling the mold a little.


17.Turn the mold over onto a clean counter.


18. Cut the soap into bars with a knife. Some people use a miter box to make square corners.


19. Allow the bars to cure for three to four weeks before using. Smaller bars cure faster than larger ones.


Additives


20. Mix candle coloring into the oil solution. If it's wax-based, melt it first in a couple of tablespoons of oil and then add it to the rest of the oil mix.


21. Realize that you can also use crayons for coloring. Experiment with colors. Note that purples are very difficult to keep true.


22. Use 1 tsp. per pound of soap of the following ingredients: cocoa powder for brown, cayenne pepper for pink-peach, liquid chlorophyll for light green, turmeric for yellow, paprika for peach and titanium dioxide for white.


23. Use 1 oz. essential oil to scent a 4-lb. batch of soap.


24. Know that 2 tsp. ground cloves makes a great-smelling soap. Try grated orange or lemon peel or ginger, too.


25. Use rose water instead of regular water for rose soap.

Oatmeal makes a great complexion soap. Use 8 oz.

Add 4 oz. cornmeal for a gritty texture.

Make soap with 1/2 oz. geranium oil for dry skin.

List Of Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables are highly diverse in color and variety.


Cruciferous vegetables belong to the mustard or Brassicasceae family. These vegetables are known for having flowers with petals arranged in groups of four that are situated in the form of a cross. Cruciferous vegetables are also known for their cardiovascular health benefits. Kale, collard and mustard greens, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts and broccoli are all members of this group of vegetables. Does this Spark an idea?


Cauliflower


The origin of the cauliflower -- whose name literally means "cabbage flower" -- is controversial, however, most accounts date it back the 6th century B.C. in the Mediterranean. Cauliflower was introduced to Europe in the early 15th century and North America began cultivating it during the late 1600s. It has a distinctive rounded mass of curds that are most commonly white, but also come in green, pink, orange and purple varieties. Cauliflower is an excellent source of fiber, folate and vitamin C.


Cabbage


Some records indicate that cabbage was cultivated as early as 2000 B.C. with its origins in Asia. The Celts are noted as introducing cabbage to Europe in 600 B.C. Cabbage is rich in potassium, iodine, fiber, sulfur and vitamins C and A.


Brussels Sprouts


The origin of brussels sprouts is debatable, however, it was probably first cultivated in its namesake city, Brussels, Belgium during the 1500s. French immigrants who settled in Louisiana probably introduced brussels sprouts to the United States.

Broccoli

Dry Shampoo Recipe For Dogs

Dry shampoo freshens your dog's coat.


While nothing replaces the traditional suds-and-water bath for deep cleaning your dog's coat, dry shampoo is a quick way to remove excess oil and absorb odors. Dry shampoo is also handy during those cold winter months when exposing a wet dog to the elements is out of the question. While commercial dry shampoo mixtures are readily available in pet supply stores, you can make your own recipe at home and give your dog a quick cleaning.


Ingredients


The ingredients in dry dog shampoo serve two purposes: to soak up excess oil and grease from the dog's coat and to dislodge small bits of dirt and debris. Cornstarch, baby powder, or talc absorb oily residue, and baking soda neutralizes disagreeable odors. Table salt offers a mild abrasive effect when massaged through the dog's fur, dislodging small bits of dirt and dust.


Mixing


Measure 2 cups of cornstarch or baby powder or a combination of both into a large plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. Add ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of table salt and shake the sealed container until the contents are well blended.


You can substitute unscented talc for the cornstarch or baby powder. In addition, cornmeal is a satisfactory substitute for table salt.


Application


Sprinkle the dry dog shampoo over your dog's coat, taking care not to get the powder into its nose or its eyes. Massage the mixture deep within the dog's fur, using your fingers to rub the salt grains gently against his hide. Leave the dry shampoo on your dog for up to 10 minutes to allow the cornstarch or baby powder to absorb as much oil as possible before brushing your dog thoroughly to remove all of the mixture.


Alternates


While salt assists in scrubbing away dirt from your dog's coat, some dog's have sensitive skin. Use only cornstarch or baby powder if your dog does not enjoy the massaging portion of its dry bath. In addition, do not use dry shampoo on a dog with open wounds.


After thoroughly brushing all the dry shampoo from your dog's coat, you might rub a fabric softener dryer sheet over his fur to reduce static and to impart a clean scent.


Repel Fleas


In addition to cleaning your dog's coat, you can decrease the risk of fleas by adding a few drops of essential oil. These tiny vials of highly concentrated plant essence are available in health food stores. To repel fleas, add up to 10 drops of citronella essential oil and forcefully shake the dry shampoo container to disperse the oil.

Take out and catering service is available. Heal With Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used as a traditional remedy for centuries.


Coconut oil is a tropical vegetable oil derived from the dried fruit of the coconut palm tree. In traditional medicine, coconut oil is used internally and externally to treat a wide variety of ailments including coughs, colds, weight gain, hypotension, nausea and tumors. While modern medical science fails to support many of these claims, clinical evidence suggests coconut oil possess healing, antibacterial and moisturizing properties when applied topically.


Instructions


1. Apply coconut oil to superficial cuts and wounds. Coconut oil's ability to promote wound healing is largely based on traditional use and anecdotal evidence. However, according to Skin Pharmacology and Physiology 2010 study, virgin coconut oil significantly reduces the healing time of excision wounds in young rats. Tests showed that virgin coconut oil increases collagen production and antioxidant levels to promote faster healing.


2. Massage coconut oil into skin to relieve dry skin conditions. Topical applications of coconut oil improves skin hydration and increases skin surface lipid levels, thus improving skin barrier function. Virgin coconut oil is an effective treatment for mild to moderate xerosis (dry skin), according to a 2004 study published in the official journal of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.


3. Use coconut oil to treat skin infections, since it has proven antiseptic properties. Virgin coconut oil successfully reduces the Staphylococcus aureus virus colonization on skin affected by the inflammatory skin disorder atopic dermatitis, according to a 2008 study published in the official journal of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

Poach Quail Eggs

Softly poached quail eggs are delicious with salad on special occasions when you'd like to serve up something "out of the ordinary" for your dinner guests. Poaching quail eggs is quite easy and can be left right until the last minute to cook for your guests, as eggs cool easily and these are supposed to be served warm with your salad. Get ready for the compliments. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Fill the medium saucepan three-fourths full of water and set on heat to boil. Allow water to come to full rolling boil. Be extra careful working around boiling water as serious burns and scalds may occur accidentally.


2. While the water is still at a rolling boil, stir the water around clockwise with the metal spoon and quickly grab the first few quail eggs, break them one at a time and drop them carefully into the swirling water. Reduce the heat to medium heat and watch the eggs turn opaque. They will be done when this occurs.


3. Gently remove soft-poached eggs from the saucepan and place on a warm plate. Bring the water to a full rolling boil once more before poaching additional eggs and follow steps one through three until all eggs are poached.


4. Serve with your favorite green salad and serve to your dinner guests.

Get Rid Of Food Bugs

Food bugs like to eat foods in your cabinets.


Pantry bugs can be one of a number of insects that feed on food in your cabinets. Among common food bugs are pantry moths and flour weevils. Pantry moths will lay their eggs as well as eat the food in your cabinets. Flour weevils are found inside flours, rice and other grains. These insects can be a nuisance but you can easily treat an infestation and get rid of them for good. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Empty your cabinets. This will allow you to inspect all the food in the cabinets and easily clean the cabinets.


2. Throw away any and all foods that are infested or are suspect. This includes open and closed packaging. Suspect packages would be damaged or crushed boxes. You may not see any bugs on these packages, but they could be housing bugs inside. Seal the trash bag in which you dispose of these foods and place the bag in a lidded trashcan outside. Do not keep it in the house for any extended period of time or the bugs may find their way back out.


3. Use hot water and household bleach to clean the inside and outside of your cabinets with a sponge. Use 1/4 cup bleach per 1 gallon of water. If you prefer not to use bleach, you can also use a household-disinfecting product and follow the mixing instructions on the bottle. Use the hottest water you can stand. Rinse the sponge often to wash away larvae and debris the sponge collects. Wear gloves when working with bleach to avoid skin reactions.


4. Use hot water and liquid dish detergent to wash the outside of all cans from your cabinets. This will wash away any larvae that on the cans that you may not see.


5. Clean the cracks and crevices in your cabinets with your vacuum's crevice attachment. Empty the contents of your vacuum into a zip-top bag and dispose of it outside.


6. Place all dried foods into food canisters or zip-top bags. This will keep bugs from reaching food sources, preventing future infestations.


7. Place bay leaves in flour, rice and grain containers. Also scatter bay leaves around the back of your pantry. Use dried leaves. Bay leaves are known to drive away flour weevils.


8. Place all your food back in the cabinets. Make sure the cabinets are completely dry before returning foods to the shelves.


9. Wash all flat surfaces in your kitchen using hot water and bleach as you did in Step 3 and vacuum using the crevice tool. Dispose of the vacuum contents the same way you did previously. Be sure to clean the walls, counters, floors and refrigerator. This will help remove any larvae around your kitchen that you cannot see.


10. Throw away any contaminated pet food. Wash all pet bowls and food storage containers using hot water and soap.

Organic products are regulated by the USDA, whereas most "natural" products are not.


Natural and organic products are not the same, yet they are often grouped together. The former term is not regulated (except for meat and poultry), whereas the latter must adhere to rigorous certification requirements. Not limited to food and beverage products, organic and natural products span a variety of consumer categories.


Body & Beauty Products


"All natural" is a tricky term, since a product may contain only one natural ingredient and still read "all natural" on the label. Consumers might be led to believe that the product is safe, when in fact it could contain other harmful ingredients. The FDA defines "natural" as something that contains no preservatives or additives; other than this, there is no further regulation. Natural beauty, cosmetic and body products may take the form of lip balms with fruit and herbal essences, salt scrubs, goat milk soaps and salves. Most organic products are being sold in conventional supermarkets by mass market retailers, with natural retailers and farmers markets representing a smaller share of the market.

In 2009, organic non-food sales went up by 9.1 percent. Purveyors of organic clothing might offer organic cotton baby clothes made of certified organic cotton; organic stuffed toys and accessories; organic bedding, as well as natural versions of these products; hemp and natural fiber clothing for men and women, sometimes featuring local designers and sweatshop-free manufacturing processes; organic T-shirts made from environmentally conscious water-based inks; organic hand-woven rugs; and recycled jewelry.

Organize A Stock The Bar Shower

A bride and groom have so many things that they need to buy when they begin their lives together. That's of course why many people have bridal showers. But what you may not have known, is that you can have a themed bridal shower. So for the bride and groom who have lived together for a while and have kitchen supplies and have furniture and who maybe seem to have it all, maybe you should throw them a "stock the bar" shower! Here's organize it!


Instructions


1. Pick a date. A wedding has so many pieces and components, events surrounding the actual wedding can be tricky to plan. The best thing to do if you are organizing a stock the bar shower is to talk to the maid of honor, or mother of the bride on what they think will be some days that work for throwing the shower. (This assumes that the shower is a surprise, if it's not however, then just ask the bride). Make sure your day is away from dress fittings, vendor meetings or other bridal tasks. Once you have all of the appropriate information, select a date!


2. Find a venue. This can be at someone's home or even a local restaurant. Really there are no rules on where to have the shower. Just some place that's big enough to accommodate everyone, and that seems fun and festive. If the bride has a favorite restaurant, consider going there, or ordering her favorite food from there!


3. Make a list of invites! When organizing a stock the bar shower it's always better to be inclusive rather than exclusive. Contact the maid of honor, the bride's parents and other friends, family and coworkers you think should be invited. Be sure to ask each one if there is someone that they feel is missing off of your tentative list. Once you feel you have a complete list move to the next step.


4. Send out the invites! Stores like Papyrus, or Paper Source are high end boutiques which offer the finest invitations. You can even buy the materials and make them yourselves! Other stores like Hallmark offer great pre-packaged invites. And of course there is evite.com which is the primary site for sending invites to people via the web. The advantage is that they are free! Also be sure when you send out the invites you organize who is bringing what. You don't want the stock the bar shower to end with the bride having 15 bottle openers. Assign people something to bring and spread it out evenly amongst the guests. General items that should be purchased are barware, such as glasses, openers and shakers and also alcohol. Make sure people are donating an array of white wine, red wine, vodka, rum, scotch, whiskey, beer and other bar items the bride or groom fancy.


5. Decide decor. This is of course an optional step and depends on the location of the shower. But flowers and pictures of the happy couple scattered around are always a nice touch. The important thing is that the location seems organized, festive and fun!


6. Follow-up! A couple days before the shower, send a reminder via email to all the attendees reminding them of the shower. Also remind each person what they are supposed to bring. Follow-up with the food vendor as well if the shower is being held someplace other than a restaurant. Reconfirm the order and time the good can be picked-up. Then sit back and enjoy! Below are 3 different formulas so that you can make one in an emergency situation.


Instructions


1. Recipe 1 -


13 oz. canned evaporated milk


13 oz water


4 oz. plain yogurt (1/2 cup)


4 egg yolks


1 tablespoon of liquid vitamins* (check with vet)


*If you are in a pinch you can leave out the vitamins.


2. Recipe 2 -


10 oz. canned evaporated milk


3 oz. water


1 raw egg yolk


1 cup of whole plain yogurt


1/2 Tsp Karo Syrup or Corn Syrup


3. Recipe 3 -


8 oz of water


8 oz evaporated milk


1 beaten egg yolk


1 tablespoon corn syrup

Why Do Catholics Light Candles In Church

Catholics light candles for many reasons.


Catholics light candles in church as a physical reminder of certain symbolisms found in scripture. Candles are lit for different reasons for both personal and a congregational levels. Candles of various types are lit during Mass, for personal reflection and during prayer times. The Catholic Church has a long history of lighting candles during religious services and ceremonies.


Symbolism


The flame of the candle represents light and scriptural references to Christ being the "Light of the world..." Flame signifies warmth and cleansing in references to Christ being a comforter and reminding church members of the belief that one day all works done by an individual will be judged and sifted by fire. The flame is also a reminder of a scripture "Your word is like fire shut up in my bones," found in the book of Jeremiah.


Reflection


Catholics lighting or gazing upon a candle often view the wax of the candle representing the body of Christ with the wick representing the belief that spirit of Christ is in each Catholic believer. Sometimes the Catholic believer thinks of the soul both of the believer and of Christ when looking upon a candle flame. Catholics believe that by lighting candles during prayer, the prayer is symbolically carried up to heaven where God waits to hear the prayer. The lighted candles are confirmation of specific vows or intentions. Lighting of the candles can also take place during short visits to the church not during Mass.


Types


The candles vary in size and the material from which they are made. Candles vary from small party teacup candles to tall candles held in glass containers with pictures on the outsides. Color can vary by season. For example, red candles can be lit during one church holiday and yellow beeswax candles during another. Votive candles appear in one part of the church where services or Mass takes place. Congregants typically light them before or after a Mass signifying personal prayers that are made for others or situations in the person's life.


Waiting


There is always at least one candle burning in the sanctuary, usually held near the altar or hung above it that stays lit all the time, day and night. It is to signify the Catholic belief that God is always present. Catholics also keep it lit at all times as to signify the belief of always waiting and watching for Christ's second coming. When the candle needs replacing, the flame from the candle carries to the new unlit candle by placing the new candlewick to the flame of the currently burning candle.


History


Candles being lit within the Catholic Church date to the early centuries and evidences can be found that candles made of beeswax were used during Mass. Candles were burned in memory of those that died, especially if the person was considered a martyr for the Catholic faith.

Make Your Own Dogfood

You can make nutritious dogfood at home with a few common ingredients.


Pets can be expensive. From their health care to day care, they can represent a major investment. One expense you can't get around in owning a dog is food. Many dog owners have managed to save money by making their own dog food at home and you can to. Making your own dog food can be done with everyday ingredients and the right tools and nutritional information.


Instructions


1. Cook the lean beef in a skillet until it is fully browned and no red is visible.


2. Discard the fat from cooking the meat and set the meat aside.


3. Boil the rice in water according to the package instructions in a five-gallon metal pot.


4. Boil an egg in a small pot for approximately 12 minutes.


5. Shell the egg and chop it finely with a knife.


6. Add the chopped egg, potatoes and frozen vegetable mix to the mixture.


7. Heat the ingredients while stirring with a large mixing spoon until the mixture has the consistency of wet dog food.


8. Remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool.


9. Store the homemade dog food in air-tight containers in a refrigerator. This recipe makes approximately one month of food with two cups of food per day. This will require approximately 40 to 60 cups or 2 to 3 gallons worth of storage container space.

Prepare Bulgur Wheat

Bulgur is a type of whole wheat that has already been cooked, left out to dry and ground into various sizes. The most commonly used size is medium bulgur. Bulgur is found in a variety of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes. It is simple to prepare and is commonly used as a main component of tabbouleh, a popular Mediterranean salad. According to Sunnyland Mills, bulgur has become popular because it is low in fat and also higher in nutritional value than other grains like couscous or rice. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Place water in medium saucepan on stove. Bring water to a boil.


2. Place bulgur in separate saucepan that has a lid.


3. Pour boiling water in the saucepan containing the bulgur. Place the lid on top of the saucepan and let it sit on the counter for 30 minutes.


4. Drain bulgur and use a fork to separate any grains that have stuck together.

Insulate A Travel Trailer For Winter

Travel trailers allow independent travel and vacations to wherever you feel like going. Travel trailers can be uncomfortable in cold weather; however, if properly insulated, a travel trailer can maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. The most important areas to insulate are the windows, vents and wire entry points. This is because the outside air can easily seep through holes in these places. To prevent loss of heat, these holes should be sealed. Investing in insulation will decrease your energy bills in the long term. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Apply sealant, such as polyurethane or silicone, to any gaps in the edges of your windows by simply locating gaps and squeezing small amounts of the adhesive sealant over the gaps. This will close the gaps which allow cold air into your travel trailer.


2. Add a clear, plastic secondary glazing to your windows. There are many self-adhesive plastic sheets available which you can install by simply pressing them against your window.


3. Hang a heavy fabric inside to cover your windows. This is a cheap and easy way to add an extra layer of insulation against the elements


4. Force foam rubber into the gaps in the floor through which the water and gas lines run through. This will prevent air from seeping in through these holes.


5. Put your vent cushion in your vent opening. This will seal the vent opening and prevent the entrance of cold air from the roof of your travel trailer.

Identify Baby Chicks


Baby chicks are cute and lovable, but if you rescued or plan to raise them you will need to learn more about them. By identifying the baby chick you will be able to determine what type of bird it is and its needs including space and type of food to feed. Some chicks are more aggressive than others, needing to be separated. Identifying a baby chick requires analyzing its coloring, size, and behavior.


Instructions


1. Examine the coloring of the bird. When baby chicks are first born their hairs are yellow, brown, white or black. By six weeks the baby chick has most of its feathers, made up of different colors depending on what type of bird it is. For example, Rhode Island red chicks are reddish with yellow markings while leghorns are yellow. Buttercup and barnevelder chicks are brown with black markings and black ameraucana chicks are black and white.


2. Analyze the appearance of the bird. Some baby chicks such as brahma and cochins have hair on their legs when they are born where most baby chicks have scaly bare skin. Some baby chicks such as leghorns have small combs, a crest of skin that stands on top of its head. Baby bantam chicks have rose-colored combs. By six weeks, the comb becomes more evident. Baby polish chicks have feathered crests.


3. Look at the size of the chick. When baby chicks are first born they are as small as the palm of your hand, about 4 inches. They are also lightweight, about 2 to 3 ounces.


4. Observe the chick's behavior. Baby chicks chirp, eat, drink and defecate throughout the day. Observing the baby chick will help you determine if they are limping, have diarrhea or wheezing. Wheezing or diarrhea will indicate an illness and need to be cared for immediately. Baby chicks are full of life and are always moving around. When several baby chicks are together, the smallest one can get picked on, possibly getting injured and will need to be separated from the others.

Make Grit For Homing Pigeons

Homing pigeons need grit to digest their food.


Along with food and water, homing pigeons need grit -- or small rocks -- to survive. Because birds do not have teeth or stomachs, they must grind their food in their gizzards using grit in order to digest it. Commercial grit for homing pigeons is available, but you can also make your own fairly easily. (Reference 1)


Instructions


1. Place concrete pieces or rocks on hard surface. Smash with sledgehammer until pea-sized pieces remain. If grit is too large, pigeons won't eat it. If it is too small, they will have to eat it constantly. (Reference 1)


2. Place pea-sized gravel in large bucket.


3. Add crushed oyster shells in ratio of one part oyster shells to three parts gravel.


4. Add crushed charcoal in same ratio as oyster shells. Sprinkle mixture with small amount of salt.


5. Stir mixture until uniform. Provide grit to pigeons in covered tray to avoid contamination from droppings. (Reference 1)

Not Get Fooled Again (Amish Heater Scam)

Sure Looks Nice....BUT,...


Back in the 1960's an English rock group called The Who had a hit record titled: "Won't get fooled again." If the song came out today, they might be talking about the Amish Heater scam that seems to rise from the dead every Holiday season. Like fleas on a dog, they're everywhere and pages of complaints pop up just like last year. I have a box full of Forest Gump stickers to send out. Are you going to be on the list?


Instructions


1. Now that the newspaper and TV ads with all the hype have started, you need to put on your "thinking cap." The so-called Amish Heater or Heat-Surge Heater is not only overpriced but the ads say the heaters will generate enough heat to cover up to 1,000 SF of room space. Bull crap. Hell, my wife's $15 buck hair dryer she got at Wal-Mart when placed on high will do that.


2. On top of that, the ad in my paper says it's an oak mantle. BS. It's not cherry or oak wood, it's poplar wood stained with oak or cherry stain. And you've got to love this hustle on the price. "If you want to save money on heating bills this winter, the 'oak' mantle heater is priced at $298, but if you call now (sounds like Vince and his chopping machine) you'll get the imported 'hi-tech' fire-less flame heat-surge miracle heater FREE...just pay shipping and handling costs.


3. This $298 price is a teaser. Your real cost could range as high as $500 dollars or more. A friend of mine who got one of these a couple years ago estimated the actual cost to be around $40 bucks to make. And, it's not energy efficient, either. If you buy one and feel like you got screwed, the "money-back" guarantee offer could take months to get a refund. My suggestion is to visit one of the large outlet stores, spend $25 or $30 dollars, and get a space heater that will do the job a whole lot better.

Eating healthy meals is an important part of staying healthy. If you plan ahead, making healthy meals will be much easier. Help your family (and yourself) stay healthy with good meal planning. Here are a few tips to help you plan healthy meals.


Instructions


1. Make a meal plan for the week. Decide what meals you would like and what your family prefers. Plan what you will make with leftovers. For example, if you are going to roast a chicken, the leftover chicken can be used to make a healthy chicken soup or salad. If you want to make hamburgers, buy extra meat to use in chili or tacos. Choose two or three main dishes to make for the week. When combined with leftovers made into a different meal, you have healthy meals planned for the whole week.


2. Decide what type of healthy side dishes to include with your meals. Soups, salads, coleslaw or steamed vegetables are a healthy choice. Side dishes can also be canned beets, beans, freshly cooked rice or potatoes. Include fresh or frozen vegetables every day for healthy meals. Vegetables can be steamed in the microwave with very little water, which not only maintains the color but the vitamins as well. Think about making a fruit salad served over cottage cheese as a healthy side dish.


3. Check your pantry and freezer. Keep your pantry and freezer well stocked with the basics. If you have a well-stocked pantry, it's easy to make a quick, but healthy meal. Keep stocks and soups in the pantry as well as chicken breasts in the freezer.


4. Make a grocery list for the whole week. When you plan meals ahead of time and do your shopping, it's much easier to make a healthy meal. By shopping ahead, you'll save time and money. You also won't be tempted to eat fast food when fast food is available at home.


5. Include fresh fruits and vegetables in your meal plan, if they aren't available then use frozen products. Also add food items high in calcium and foods that are high in fiber for a healthy meal plan.

What Are Spelt Beans

Spelt is high in fiber and contains eight essential amino acids.


Although often used in recipes containing beans, such as soups and salads, spelt is not a bean, but a type of grain related to wheat. Spelt has been used by Americans, Italians and Germans since 7,000 B.C. and is a popular ingredient in many foods due to its rich, nutty flavor and high nutritional value. The whole grain berry resembles a barley pearl, leading some to believe it is a bean. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Origins and History


Spelt originated in southeast Asia and was one of the first grains to be cultivated by farmers. It was brought to the Middle East more than 9,000 years ago and then spread to Europe. A cousin to the traditional wheat grain, spelt is one of the oldest cultivated grains. There was a decline in its availability, but it was reintroduced in 1987 by Purity Foods.


Health Benefits


Spelt grains contain high amounts of dietary phosphorus, magnesium, niacin, copper and manganese, making it an excellent food for those suffering from diabetes, atherosclerosis and migraine headaches. The grain berry grows on thick husks, which protect it from environmental pollutants and pests, reducing the need for pesticides or other chemicals. Spelt is highly nutritious and is higher in protein, fat and fiber than most other varieties of wheat. It is water soluble, dissolving and absorbing easily by the body. Individuals who have allergies to wheat usually have no reaction to spelt.


Uses


Often found in organic and health food markets, spelt can be purchased as flour, bread, cereal, pasta and the whole grain berry. The spelt grain can be used as a substitution for wheat in cookies, cakes, breads, muffins, pancakes and waffles. Recently, it has been used to feed horses and livestock as a nutritious alternative to oats.


Health Concerns


Although not technically a wheat, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognizes spelt as such because it contains gluten and requires all products containing the grain to be labeled accordingly. How Long To Cook Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts

Chicken breasts can be the centerpieces for a quick and healthy dinner or lunch.


Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are popular because they are low in fat and quick and easy to cook. Chicken breasts, like all poultry, should be cooked to well done or an internal temperature of 165 degrees. The USDA considers a serving size to be 4 oz. Many chicken breasts sold in the grocery store also include the "chicken tender" beneath the breast portion of the meat. The tenders can be removed and used for other meals. Roasting Chicken Breasts


Grease a shallow baking pan and place chicken breasts in a single layer. Add 1/4 cup of water to help prevent the breasts from drying out. Roast in a 350-degree oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until completely cooked. Fully cooked chicken will seep clear liquid when pierced with a fork or knife. For absolute safety, use a meat thermometer to ensure doneness.


Grilling Chicken Breasts


Grill boneless, skinless chicken breasts in a covered cooker over medium hot coals. Depending on the thickness, the chicken will be done in 8 to 10 minutes; turn the breasts once during the cooking time. Check for doneness with a meat thermometer.


Pressure Cooking Chicken Breasts


Place the breasts on the bottom of the pressure cooker. Add any seasonings and 1/2 cup of water. Lock the cover in place and bring to pressure over medium high heat. Turn the heat down to medium low and cook for 12 minutes. Release the steam by placing the cooker under cold, running water until the lid can be removed without using any force.


Crock Pot


Place the chicken breasts in a single layer in the bottom of a slow cooker. If desired, add vegetables. Add 1/2 cup chicken broth or water. Cover and cook on low for 5 hours. If using frozen chicken breasts, cook for 8 hours.


Steaming


Season chicken breasts and place in a single layer in a steamer basket or tray. Steam over boiling water for 20 minutes or until done.


Pan Frying or Saut


Pound chicken breasts to a uniform thickness using a meat mallet or the bottom of a heavy pot. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Test for doneness with a meat thermometer.

Turkey meat is naturally dry, but this can be rectified by cooking the bird in a moist environment, such as a Crockpot. The bird is large and can weigh a great deal, even with feathers removed and the body cavity cleaned, so cooking it in the pot can be slightly difficult. With an adequate Crockpot, however, moist and flavorful meat is easy to produce. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Remove the giblets from the body cavity and rinse the entire bird under running water. Pat it dry with paper towels.


2. Place the halved lemon, eight garlic cloves and one quartered onion in the body cavity.


3. Set the bird, breast side up, in the Crockpot and pour the chicken stock around it.


4. Baste the turkey with the melted butter. Sprinkle on the salt, pepper and chosen spices.


5. Place the remaining onion and garlic around the turkey. Set the lid of the Crockpot securely on top.


6. Turn the dial to high and cook the turkey for 5 hours.


7. Insert the meat thermometer into the thickest part of the turkey, without touching the bone. It should read 170 degrees F.


8. Cook the turkey for another hour if the internal temperature has not reached 170.


9. Reduce the heat to warm and keep it at that setting until ready to eat. Let sit, covered with tinfoil, for 20 minutes before eating.

Attach A Dry Erase Board To A Refrigerator

A dry erase board has a china-like surface on which special markers can be used and easily erased. Used in businesses and schools, the convenience of a dry erase board has reached the household. The board can be used for lists, notes to the family or a fun place for kids to draw. A small dry erase board can be secured to the refrigerator. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions


1. Purchase craft magnets at an office supply store or craft store. Craft magnets come in rolls, dots (circles) or other shapes. The magnet has a sticky back with a peel-off covering that remains in place until you are ready to adhere the magnet to a surface.


2. Clean the back of the dry erase board and the refrigerator with an ammonia-based cleaner, like glass cleaner, to remove all residue. Magnets may adhere to the sides of a stainless steel refrigerator if the sides are simply painted to look like stainless steel. Otherwise, they won't stick.


3. Remove the backing from four magnets and secure the magnets to the back perimeter of the board at each corner.


4. Attach the dry erase board to the refrigerator to see if the amount of magnets used is sufficient to hold the board in place. Depending on the size of the board and the size of the magnets, additional magnets may be needed.

Care For Fresh Basil

Crushing the fresh basil leaves can bruise them.


Basil is a delicate annual easily damaged by rough handling or wetting its leaves for a prolonged period. The flavor of fresh basil is crisp and adds a tasty accent to tomato-based dishes, as well as pesto. The leaves of the basil plant provide the flavor and aroma and it is critical to keep these leaves dry and cool so that they do not spot, turn black and lose flavor. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Harvest fresh basil leaves about six weeks after you have planted this annual. Look for budding taking place and cut the longer stems above a leaf cluster with scissors before the basil plant has a chance to flower completely.


2. Gently pull the leaves off the stem and discard any black, spotted leaves. Do not crush or tear the leaves, as this will bruise them, lessening their flavor and shelf life. Rinse the leaves with water and gently pat them dry with paper towels. Use the fresh leaves right away.


3. Do not rinse the fresh basil leaves if you must harvest them a few days before you need them. Set the harvested leaves out to dry on paper towels for about an hour. Turn the leaves over after an hour and let the other side dry. Gently pat away any excess moisture on the leaves with a paper towel. Do not crush or crinkle the leaves.


4. Keep the leaves as intact as possible. Do not chop, cut or tear the leaves intended for later use. The fresh basil pieces will begin to wilt and lose their flavor. They may also start to turn black as well.


5. Store the fresh basil leaves flat in a small plastic bag without piling the leaves on top of each other. Place the bag in the refrigerator. The leaves should keep for up to three days. Remove the fresh basil leaves from the refrigerator and rinse them off with water when you are ready to use them.
