Our economy is in trouble and more people are losing their jobs daily. Even those who are working must save for the unexpected and keep costs down. It is possible to live a frugal lifestyle and have a few luxuries with a bit of planning. Gas prices keep going up and everything costs more today. Making frugal living a habit takes time but is well worth the effort.

1. Set aside some time to take a really good look at the way you spend your money. Look for hidden expenses that might not ordinarily be noticed. The high cost of gas makes it important to keep costs in line by using less. It is also important to think of the environment. Small changes can give back a big payoff!


Commute


If you make a long commute to work, consider using public transportation such as park and ride busses, and or, metro rail. Now, I know that some of you are drawing back in horror at the very thought! I had the same thought the first time I considered riding the bus. Surprise...surprise! I loved it If you take the same bus every day you will find the same people riding with you and you will soon have bus friends. It is easy to become accustomed to ignoring the traffic and disembark right in front of, or close to your building.


2. Errands


A well planned route will save time as well as gas; which translates into saved money for you! Plan your stops so that you make a circle. Don't dart all over the place! Work your way out from stop to stop and then start the journey home in the same manner. You will end up at home without making an extra trip. Plan your grocery shopping for the last stop. Shop close to home so you will not leave cold items out of the refrigerator or freezer too long.


3. Dry Cleaning Savings


I discovered that by purchasing a dry cleaning kit I could dry clean most of my clothing in the dryer and save a lot of money! Use the cleaning fluid to spot clean your clothing and place in the plastic bag designed for dry cleaning clothes with the dry cleaning cloth and throw in the dryer. Hang up clothing and do not let them wrinkle by staying in the dryer. Sometimes I throw a few pieces or a garment into the dryer with a one of those cloths used to keep clothing soft. This will freshen a garment that is not really dirty and give you more wear out of it between cleanings.


4. Online Shopping


Online window shopping is the way to go. You can find and price items you need before you go to the store. Many stores have online shopping with ship to store service, or in store pick up of items ordered online. This is a great way to manage your time and save money at the same time.


Online shopping can be hazardous, but you must shop reputable stores, or internet stores such as Amazon.com. I have successfully purchased many times from JCPenney , Dillards, Macy's , Horchow, Saks Fifth Avenue, Walmart, and others. Amazon.com has a wonderful savings program. 5. Shopping Helps


Make a list. I know this is really basic, but if you make a list and stick to it you will not be so tempted by impulse buying. Your will be saving money reinforcing your new frugal habit.


Stock up on sale items. Kroger's regularly runs 10 items for $10.00. Sometimes you can mix and match the items getting you 10 separate items for $10.00. You can use this promotion in combination with your coupon shopping and really save big!


Shopping at membership stores such as Sam's Club can be a real money saver. However, you must know your retail store pricing to be successful. You can not buy small quantities. However, this is the best place to shop when you are planning a large gathering or during the holidays! They have nice gift items as well.


Living frugal can be learned. Making frugal living a habit takes time but it will pay off in the end. Once you have formed these habits they will last a life time. Live frugally!

Homemade Cream Foundation Facial

Facial cream is used to soften and clean skin on the face and neck. It's beneficial to the care of skin, which undergoes daily exposure to sun and dirt. Homemade facial creams are effective and cost less than those on the market. Here are some basic facial cream recipes that can be prepared at home. Does this Spark an idea?


Basic recipe


This is a basic foundation facial cream recipe. Herbs can be added that are especially formulated for your skin type. Place 4 oz.of the fresh organic herb you choose in a glass bowl. Pour 1/3 pint of boiling water over them, and allow to steep for four hours. Into a small, already boiling double broiler add 150 milliliters of almond, olive or apricot essential oil, and 2 tbsp. of beeswax. Slowly melt the beeswax before adding 2 tbsp. of organic cocoa butter. Allow the cocoa butter to melt into the beeswax. In a different pot full of lukewarm water, add only the liquid from your herbal infusion. Add 1 tsp. of borax and 2 tsp. of raw honey to this mixture. Mix all the additives together until they have dissolved. Remove both pots from heat and slowly add the herbal-infused mixture to the oil-based mixture. Immediately begin to whisk the mixtures together, forming a creamy consistency. This cream can be stored in small containers and does not require refrigeration.


Grape seed recipe


Before beginning this recipe make sure all ingredients have been at room temperature at least 30 minutes. Mix 1 cup grape seed oil, ½ cup virgin coconut oil, 1 tsp. lanolin and ½ oz. beeswax in the top pan of a double broiler. Melt all ingredients together over low heat. Pour mixture into a glass measuring cup and allow it to cool. Add 2/3 cup distilled water, ½ cup aloe vera juice, the contents of five Vitamin E capsules, and 2 drops of essential oil of your choice in a blender. Blend the mixture at highest possible speed for a minute. While mixing, drip the mixture from the glass measuring cup into blender. This will thicken the cream mixture. Once thickened to a creamy consistency, place in jars and allow to cool. Store the mixture in a cool place.


Overnight cream


This nighttime facial cream will soften and nourish skin as you sleep. Melt 3 tbsp. lanolin in a double boiler. Add 1 tablespoon each of sunflower and almond oil, whisking well. Remove the pot from the heat, and allow mixture to cool. Whisk in 1 tsp. lavender oil until mixture becomes thick. Allow mixture to cool before pouring into jars.

Roast A Turkey On A Traeger

Most people choose to cook their turkeys in ovens. By doing this, they are roasting them, which is a method of cooking that utilizes dry heat over a period of time to cook the turkey. Grilling is another method of roasting, as is smoking. If you are cooking on a Traeger grill, you can smoke and grill your turkey, roasting it in your own backyard. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Choose a 15-pound turkey. Defrost a frozen turkey in the refrigerator by placing the bird in a plastic trash bag and leaving it in the refrigerator to thaw for three days.


2. Remove the giblets after unwrapping the thawed turkey. Wash the turkey under cold running water, and allow the water that collects in the chest cavity to drain. Dry the turkey with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Cut away the excess skin around the neck of the bird, and discard it.


3. Mix brine in a large bowl or roasting pan. Combine 1 1/2 cups salt, 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1 tsp. garlic salt, 2 tbsp. ground black pepper and enough water to completely submerge the turkey. Mix completely. Add the turkey, and pour in more water if necessary. Place it in the refrigerator, and leave it to brine at least eight hours.


4. Turn the grill to "High," and allow it to preheat for 20 minutes before turning it to "Smoke."


5. Place the turkey in the center of the grill, breast-side up. Close the door, and allow the turkey to smoke for three to six hours, depending on how much smoke flavor you desire. Monitor the smoking process by checking to make sure the grill is still smoking.


6. Turn the grill back to "High" to finish roasting the bird. Continue to cook for another one to two hours or until the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F for the breast and 180 degrees F for the thighs. To test the temperature, insert a meat thermometer into the meat, but do not allow it to touch the bone.


7. Move the turkey to a serving platter, and allow it sit for 15 minutes before carving so the juices can set in the bird. If you carve sooner, you run the risk of a dry bird.

Alcohol Detoxification Symptoms

An individual who has stopped drinking alcohol "cold turkey" goes through a lot of withdrawal symptoms that can range from mild to even fatal. These alcohol detoxification symptoms are usually more intense depending on how addicted to alcohol the individual was or is. Alcoholics who abruptly stop drinking alcohol are generally going to experience some physical discomfort.


Common Symptoms


For less dependent alcohol consumers, some common alcohol detoxification symptoms include mild ones such as getting the shakes, excessive sweating (particularly during the nighttime), nausea, vomiting, headaches, increased blood pressure and a faster heartbeat. These symptoms are uncomfortable but not necessarily harmful and are often joined by cravings for alcohol.


Serious Symptoms

As severe alcohol detoxification symptoms occur, the "phenomenon of craving" might start, which is an intense craving for alcohol. With this craving, the body is telling the individual that it needs alcohol immediately. At this point, to an alcoholic it might seem like the only way to alleviate this uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms is to have an alcoholic drink, which sets up the cycle of drinking yet again.


Delirious Tremens


Serious withdrawal symptoms might turn into delirious tremens (DTs) after between three to five days of no alcohol consumption. Some typical DT symptoms include disorientation, being extremely confused and dazed, hyperactivity, cardiovascular disturbances, hallucination and shifts in breathing, temperature control and circulation. DTs can also lead to a racing heart and dramatic increase in the blood pressure, which can lead to dehydration.

In many cases severe alcohol detoxification symptoms (especially during DTs) can lead to grand mal seizures, strokes and heart attacks.

Keep Chicken Stock In The Refrigerator

When you have leftover vegetables, chicken meat and chicken bones, consider using them to make chicken stock. This versatile liquid can serve as a flavorful base for most soups you may wish to make in the future. If you are making the stock for use more than a few days in the future, freeze it in airtight containers for up to six months. If you intend to use your stock within a few days, however, you can keep it in the refrigerator instead. This is also true of commercial bottled or canned chicken stock. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Allow your stock to cool to near room temperature if it is still hot. Do not, however, leave it out for more than two hours after you remove it from the heat. Doing so can lead to a buildup of potentially harmful bacteria.


2. Transfer the chicken stock to airtight plastic or glass containers. Do this regardless of whether you made the stock yourself or opened a metal container of commercial stock. If your commercial stock came in a glass container with an airtight lid, however, you may leave it in its original container. Seal the containers tightly.


3. Store your chicken stock in the refrigerator for three to four days if it is homemade. Commercial chicken stock will last for up to four to five days.

Otherwise, a more informal outline for your own purposes will suffice.

Some states will allow you to work from your home kitchen, provided you separate business food from personal food, don't have pets inside, or separate storage facilities. However, some states will not allow a home kitchen to be used. You may need to either build a second kitchen, rent a commercial kitchen (churches and schools will often rent out their facilities) or use a licensed "mobile" kitchen for your business. Sorting out the legalities of a baking business might be the most difficult part of start-up.


3. Market your muffins. Where will you sell your muffins? Do you intend to sell them to local restaurants, convenience stores or grocery stores for resale? Or would you rather sit at the farmer's market and sell them yourself? Whatever you decide, you will have to determine how you will package them, design and print a label, and figure out your price points. Directions For Cooking Rice

Rice is a popular food in much of the world.


In the supermarket, you will see many different varieties of rice to choose from. In the U.S., long grain white rice is the most popular choice. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


In a sieve, rinse and drain one cup of white long grain rice. Place the rice in a pan with a tight fitted lid. Add 1 tsp. of oil or butter and 1/2 tsp. of salt (optional). Add two cups of water. Bring water to a boil. Cover the pan with the lid and let it simmer until water is absorbed. After water has absorbed (15 to 20 minutes), remove from heat and let the rice sit with the lid on for five minutes. Fluff the rice gently before serving.


Tips


Soaking rice for 30 minutes will reduce the cooking time. Rinse rice several times before cooking to remove some of the starch; this helps to separate the grains. Stirring the rice during and after cooking will make it sticky. One cup of uncooked rice will give you about three cups of cooked rice. Use leftover rice in soup, stir fry or salad.


Other Popular Rice


Short and medium grain rice is softer and more sticky. Short grain is often used in desserts like rice pudding and is good for rice balls and sushi. Enriched rice has nutrients added and should not be washed. Converted rice has been pressure steamed, which results in a firm fluffy rice, a good choice for a side dish. Brown rice also comes in different grains; because it is less processed than white rice, it retains more of its nutrients and takes longer to cook. Instant rice is precooked, which is helpful if you are in a rush.

Steam & Blanch Bean Sprouts

Tender bean sprouts require only gentle cooking.


Bean sprouts do not require much cooking to be edible, but the wet, warm conditions in which they are grown can be breeding grounds for microbes. Bean sprouts are safest when cooked somewhat. Steaming and blanching are two of the most common methods for cooking bean sprouts. Steaming prevents the sprouts from losing any nutrients in the cooking process, while blanching cooks them more quickly while still minimizing nutrient loss. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


Steaming


1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Place a bamboo or metal steamer basket insert in the pot before boiling. If using an electrical steamer, plug it in, add water and turn it on according to the manufacturer's instructions.


2. Add the bean sprouts to the steamer basket. Whether you are using a basket insert or an electrical steamer, the bean sprouts go in the basket above the water.


3. Reduce the water to a simmer, if using a stove top steamer.


4. Place the lid on the pot or electrical steamer. Steam the bean sprouts for two to three minutes and remove them from the steamer.


Blanching


5. Set a colander inside your sink basin.


6. Bring a very large pot of water to a full, rolling boil.


7. Add the bean sprouts and boil for them 30 seconds.


8. Remove the pot from the heat and strain the bean sprouts by pouring the contents of the pot into the colander.


9. Plunge the bean sprouts into a large bowl of ice water.


10. Drain the bean sprouts once more in the colander.

Organic makeup is much easier to make than you might think. Many of the recipes involve using ingredients that you can probably find in your very own kitchen. In recent years organic makeup has experienced quite a surge in popularity as more and more people search for products that are good for them and for the environment. Organic makeup does not contain any harsh chemicals or preservatives the way many other makeup products do. Thus, the use of organic makeup is much less damaging for your skin and body. Moreover, disposing of the makeup does not harm the Earth's delicate ecosystems. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Purchase some essential ingredients, and find recipes for various organic makeup products. Depending on the recipe, you will need certain makeup-making supplies such as waxes, cream bases, earth-based minerals and other materials, fragrance oils and essential oils. You will also need some natural products like avocado, lemon, vanilla extract, olive oil and crushed herbs. You can purchase these ingredients at organic food stores as well as from makeup suppliers. There are many makeup recipes available online as well as in various recipe books. Check the resources section below for some recipe guides.


2. Make a moisturizing body cream using organic ingredients. You will need 3 oz. of unrefined cocoa butter, 1 1/2 oz. of coconut oil (the solid white kind, not the liquid kind), 1 oz. avocado oil, 1/2 oz. of macadamia oil, 1/2 oz. of virgin olive oil, 2 tsp. beeswax, 1 tsp. of vanilla fragrance oil for scent, 1 tsp. of vitamin E, and 1 tsp. of cornstarch. Gently heat all the ingredients (except the vanilla fragrance oil, vitamin E and cornstarch) until the beeswax and cocoa butter have completely melted. Allow the mixture to cool while stirring frequently. Place it in the freezer for about 3 minutes and then remove it and beat it with an electric beater. Repeat this process until the mixture is light and fluffy like whipped cream. Add the cornstarch, vitamin E and vanilla oil and beat the mixture for a few more minutes. Store your deliciously fragrant and moisturizing body butter in a glass jar for future use.


3. Make an organic mineral blush that will give a nice glow to your cheeks. You will need two scoops of bordeaux mica, one scoop of oriental beige mica and half a scoop of splendid blue mica: Please note that the organic mica and other similar minerals must be purchased from a makeup wholesaler. Mix all the mica together in a small plastic bowl until the colors have completely blended together. Use a spoon to break up any solid pieces of the mica; you may also use a coffee grinder if the pieces are particularly large or hard. Store the blush in a plastic container for future use. Use a regular blush or powder brush to apply the mineral blush to your cheeks.


4. Make a soothing and fragrant lip balm. You will need 3 tsp. of shea butter, 1 1/2 tsp. of sweet almond oil, 1 tsp. of castor oil, 1/2 tsp. of cocoa butter, 1 tsp. of chocolate extract, 1/4 tsp. of dark chocolate or 1/2 tsp. of cocoa powder, 1/4 tsp. of aloe vera gel and 1/4 tsp. of sweet orange essential oil. Melt the shea butter, only 1/2 tsp. each of almond oil, cocoa butter and castor oil and blend them until you get a cohesive mixture. In a separate bowl, melt the chocolate and the remaining 1/2 tsp. of almond oil. Add it to the previous mixture along with the chocolate oil. Use an electric beater to combine the two mixtures, and then place the mixture in the fridge so that it can cool and harden a little. Remove it after about 5 minutes and beat it again with the electric beater. This will give the mixture a nice, creamy consistency. Finally, add the aloe vera gel and orange essential oil and mix well. Store the final mixture in a small container or empty lip balm jar for future use.


5. Make a face mask using just avocado, mayonnaise and lemon juice. Mash up a whole avocado and add about 6 tbsp. of mayonnaise; blend well. Add about 4 tsp. of lemon juice and mix until you have a creamy consistency. Apply the mask to a clean, damp face and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Store any remainders in the refrigerator for future use.

Tell If Hamburger Has Gone Bad

Spoiled hamburger meat can contain dangerous bacteria.


According to the USDA, hamburger meat is not the same as ground beef. This national food overseer allows beef fat to be added to "hamburger meat" during processing but not to ground beef. Besides this fatty difference, the process is relatively the same. Because hamburger meat is ground, a larger portion of it is exposed to dangerous bacteria such as Salmonella or Staphylococcus. Instructions


1. Examine the hamburger meat packaging to find the "sell by" date. This retailer-set date tells the consumer when he should throw the package away. If the current date is past the "sell-by" date, consider the meat to be bad.


2. Open the packaging of the hamburger meat using a knife blade. Cut along the edge of the packaging, piercing the plastic cling. Sniff the hamburger meat. If the meat smells sour or rotten, it is bad.


3. Look at the color of the hamburger meat. If the meat's color has changed from red and pink to entirely white, gray, or brown, the meat has gone bad.

Tell If An Uncooked Chicken In The Fridge Is Bad

Spoiled chicken feels unnaturally slimy, sticky and tacky.


It is important to inspect chicken products before using them in a recipe, as spoiled chicken contains agents that will make you sick, and there is no way to "save" bad chicken. Using your senses to thoroughly inspect all portions of the chicken will help prevent you and your loved ones from accidentally ingesting spoiled meat. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Inspect the "Use By" date located on the chicken's wrapping. Discard the poultry if this date has come and gone, unless you froze the chicken before the listed date.


2. Remove all foil or other wrapping from the chicken. This lets you thoroughly inspect the chicken.


3. Smell the uncooked chicken. Bad uncooked chicken has a foul smell, which is recognizable from even a foot or two away. Discard the chicken immediately if any such odor is recognized.


4. Rub your fingers along the surface of the chicken. Spoiled or bad chicken feels unnaturally slimy, sticky and tacky.


5. Look for discoloration on the uncooked chicken, such as gray or darker areas. While discoloration alone does not necessarily mean the chicken is bad, this, along with a bad odor and/or tacky or slimy texture, is a definite indication the meat is spoiled.

The agriculture industry provides a number of well-paid jobs.


Agriculture is a multibillion dollar industry that employed 1.8 million people in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Agricultural industries include the wholesale and retail trade of agricultural goods, and production and processing. Many well-paid jobs provide services that support these activities. Managerial positions are listed among the top 25 highest-paying jobs, as are veterinarians and engineers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment Statistics survey.


Agricultural Engineer


Agricultural engineers apply their knowledge of scientific engineering principles and agricultural practice to agricultural problems. The role requires the engineer to protect and preserve living things and resources, using a combination of mechanical, electronic and civil engineering. This can include designing buildings and equipment, examining water usage and distribution, and streamlining the processing of agricultural end products. Enrich Depleted Soil For Gardening

Enrich last year's depleted soil with necessary amendments.


By the end of the gardening season, your soil likely uses up all its nutrients to grow your plants. When the next season rolls around, it may not have enough nutrients left to produce healthy, productive plants. By enriching the soil every year, you you can help it to stay healthy. Acidic soils may experience deficiencies in calcium and magnesium and produce aluminum or manganese toxicity to plants, while alkaline soils experience deficiencies in iron, zinc and manganese. Adding lime or sulfur to the soil brings its pH into balance. Organic amendments add nutrients and improve drainage for any soil type. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Till the garden with a rake or rotary tiller to a depth of 8 inches. Tilling the soil loosens it and makes it easier to incorporate amendments.


2. Perform a soil test to determine what it needs for enrichment. Take four samples--only about a 1/4 cup--of soil from four different areas of the garden. Mix them thoroughly. Purchase a soil test kit from a home improvement store or contact your local extension office, as they often perform soil testing for free.


3. Add lime to the soil if pH is too low or sulfur if pH is too high. Follow the recommendations provided with the product to determine how much lime or sulfur to use. Till the lime or sulfur into the soil. Till to a depth of 8 inches to thoroughly incorporate it into the soil.


4. Add a 2-inch layer of compost, manure or an equal combination of compost or manure and peat moss on top of the soil. Till these amendments into the soil, working down to a depth of 8 inches to mix them in completely.


5. Water the soil until it appears moist to mix and activate the amendments.

Electric cigarettes are being advertised and sold as an alternative to smoking real cigarettes. They are said, by the manufacturers, to have much less chemicals, and possibly help in quitting smoking. Here are some facts about electric cigarettes to help you in deciding if they may be a safe alternative for you.


Ingredients


Electronic cigarettes may not contain as many chemicals and pollutants as their traditional counterpart, but according to the U.S. FDA, the do contain some carcinogens and other toxic chemicals such as an ingredient used to make antifreeze, diethylene glycol and nicotine.


Function


There is no smoke when using an electronic cigarette, but rather a vapor that is inhaled by the user. There is virtually no smell to others around, and no dangerous second hand smoke, so in theory it may be safer for others who are in the same room with the smoker than traditional cigarettes are.


Theories/Speculation


The FDA reports that there is concern about more of an addiction to nicotine with electric cigarettes in younger people because they are readily available to purchase and use with no warnings such as the Surgeon General's warning on all traditional cigarettes.


Benefits


If electronic cigarettes are used as a substitute for traditional cigarettes as a means to quit gradually, it may work as any stop smoking aid would, if the person using it is determined to continue cutting back and quitting. If not, they may become just another addiction for the person using them.


Conclusion


Electronic cigarettes may be a better choice than traditional cigarettes, but there is still the potential for addiction and health problems because of the toxic chemicals which they are made with. There may be some side effects with them, such as reactions to the diethylene glycol and other carcinogens which the FDA has found in some of the samples they have tested.

Preparation


1. Ask the butcher for assistance.


Ask the butcher for pig's feet because they're often kept frozen and stored in the back. You may also have the butcher split and cut them into pieces for you, depending on how they are to be cooked and served.

3. Wash thoroughly in water.

4. Split four pig's feet in half lengthwise.


5. Chop two medium onions, two stalks celery and one garlic clove. Prepare one bay leaf, 1 tsp. salt, 1 cup white vinegar, 1 tsp. black pepper, 3 tsp. crushed red pepper, and barbecue sauce measured to taste.


6. Add all ingredients to a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and reduce to simmer. Cover pot and cook approximately three hours. Stir occasionally.


Sweet and Sour


7. Blanch pig's feet by pouring boiling water over them for one minute.


8. Brown in oil. Add 2 oz. of ginger, 2 tbsp. vegetable oil, 2 1/2 cups black rice vinegar, 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water, and 1/2 tsp. salt.


9. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for one to two hours. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.


10. Place eight peeled hard-boiled eggs in the pot. Cover and let stand for one day. Reheat and serve.


Deep-fried


11. Combine pig's feet, 6 cups chicken stock, 1/2 bunch thyme, one diced onion, two sliced carrots, and 1 tsp. peppercorns in a large pot. Simmer for about four hours. Remove pigs feet and let cool.


12. Herbs like rosemary and thyme add flavor.


In a small covered pot, cook 1/4 minced onion, two cloves minced garlic, and a dash of salt in 1 tbsp. olive oil, on low heat, for seven minutes. Cool and stir in 1 tsp. minced thyme and 1/2 tsp. minced rosemary.


13. Remove bones from the pig's feet. This will require a bit of twisting and pulling. Lay each foot on a piece of plastic wrap. Spread herb mixture on each and roll tightly. Tie the ends and refrigerate overnight.


14. Put 1 cup flour in one bowl and 1 cup dried bread crumbs in another. Add three, lightly beaten egg yolks, 3 tbsp. water, and 2 tsp. brown mustard in a third bowl.


15. Unwrap pig's feet and cut into slices. Dip them in the flour, egg wash, and bread crumbs. Let rest for a half hour.


16. Preheat oil over medium-high heat. Add a few slices at a time and fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt.

Make Homemade Jelly Beans

Jelly beans


After all their years on the market, jelly beans remain one of the most popular candies, appealing to everyone from children to presidents. Less messy than chocolate, their hard shell makes them a good snack either for the office or for traveling. You can even make your own jelly beans at home. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Place 3 packs gelatin, 16 oz. sugar and 12 oz. water in a pan. Bring the ingredients to a boil over medium heat, stirring as you mix them. Continue to stir for 20 minutes.


2. Remove the pan from heat, and add 1/4 tsp. salt, 4 oz. orange juice and 2 oz. lemon juice. After the mixture has cooled a bit, stir in 4 tsp. orange zest and 4 tsp. lemon zest.


3. Chill a medium-size baking pan, then fill it with the mixture and let it harden for 4 to 5 hours.


4. Loosen the jelly from the pan with a knife, and dump it onto a cutting surface. Cut the jelly into small pieces, dusting them with cornstarch. Put them on a wire rack to dry.


5. Pour the jelly pieces into the coating bowl attachment, and add 2 oz. water and 6 oz. sugar. Turn the mixer on high for the suggested time according to the manufacturer's directions, or until the shells have achieved the thickness and appearance you want.

Starting a bakery is an exciting endeavor for any entrepreneur.


Setting up a bakery requires knowledge and careful preparation. Not only do you need to have professional baking expertise, you also need to know the laws and regulations that apply to business owners in your state. To start a bakery, recruit help and plan carefully to ensure a successful operation.


Instructions


1. Familiarize yourself with the laws in your state regarding business organization, ownership and management. Obtain the proper forms and applications to register your bakery with the state.


2. Choose a location, depending on the size and scope of your bakery. Ideally, choose a downtown or highly trafficked location if your bakery will sell breads and sandwich items to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If your bakery will only prepare baked goods in bulk for distributors or restaurants, do not worry about pedestrian traffic.


3. Hire help for the projects and duties that you are not willing or capable of performing yourself. For instance, hire a professional decorator to assist you with designing the interior of the bakery and an accountant or bookkeeper to assist with the daily administrative tasks. Staff your bakery with pastry chefs and counter attendants.


4. Choose a catchy name for your bakery so that it will be remembered. Create a logo or slogan to trademark your business. Print business cards for friends, family and new clients to distribute on your behalf to generate interest and business.


5. Host a public ribbon cutting or opening day celebration. Prepare donuts and bagels to patrons to showcase your baked goods. Distribute coupons to attendees so that they return again.

Clean Nonstick Cookware

While abrasive cleaners, brushes and scouring pads are available for cleaning cookware, nonstick cookware requires careful cleaning to avoid scratching the surface, which over time can chip off and is potentially unsafe to use. Nonstick pots and pans have a special Teflon coating that is ideal for easy clean-ups and does not require abrasive cleaning products if used according to the cookware's instructions. Instructions


1. Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar into the nonstick pot or pan and fill with water.


2. Set the cookware on the stovetop and turn on the burner. Wait until the water and vinegar begin to boil and turn off the burner.


3. Pour out the liquid and dispense a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap onto the cookware.


4. Wet the cleaning pad and gently scrub the cookware's surface in a circular motion to remove residue.


5. Rinse the surface with cool water and place the pot or pan upside down on a dish rack to air dry.

Use Grits On Fire Ants

Ants are attracted to sugar and starchy foods, making grits a perfect natural pesticide.


Grits are a natural, cost efficient and effective way of getting rid of ants. Grits are most effective in killing off ants when the ant bed can be treated to eliminate the whole tribe. Grits are a good alternative to pesticides, especially if you have children and animals that may come into contact with the ant bed. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Sprinkle a small amount of instant grits on top of the ant bed. The grits should not completely cover the ant bed, but they should be spread evenly across the ant bed so you can still see dirt between the grits.


2. Leave the grits on the ant bed for at least two days to allow the worker ants to pick up and take the grits back to the rest of the tribe and to allow time for the grits to kill them.


3. Check the ant bed frequently and add more grits to the top of the bed when it rains or when you see that the grits layer is thin. With continued treatment for as long as two weeks, the fire ants should be eradicated.

Factors Influencing Employee Motivation

Employees are motivated by recognition from bosses for a job well done.


Bonuses and other monetary rewards are often considered to be the top reasons employees are motivated to do a good job and remain loyal to a company. However, motivation is hampered when employees don't get positive feedback from their bosses, no matter how much employees are paid. That's just one way poor communication hinders motivation in the workplace.


Employer vs. Employee


Some employers make the mistake of assuming that they and their employees are motivated by the same things. For instance, a "USA Today" article titled "Finding What Motivates Your Employees" points out that entrepreneurs have drive and a willingness to take risks to build businesses. However, employees can be more motivated by job security, good benefits and raises. Still, the article notes that employees and business owners have some motivational factors in common, such as the satisfaction of knowing they've done a good job.


Recognition


The "USA Today" article asserts that studies consistently indicate that employees appreciate being recognized for good work almost more than other rewards. Furthermore, they tend to work harder if they know that their company recognizes employees for good work. The recognition employees receive can be as simple as sending a department-wide email about an employee's good work or publishing a worker's job-related achievements in a company newsletter.


Communication


An "Inc." magazine article notes that the boss' attitude is contagious because it spreads throughout the company and sets either a positive or negative tone in the workplace. The article, titled "7 Tips for Motivating Employees," suggests that communication from the boss is the key to making employees feel like they're included in company decisions and are part of the company's success. Workers also tend to be more motivated to do their jobs well when they're asked for suggestions on improve the company. However, some of those suggestions need to be implemented for employees to take requests for suggestions seriously.


Self Improvement


Longtime employees sometimes get bored with their jobs, especially if they think they don't have opportunities to improve their job skills and learn new ones. In such cases, employees could be motivated by educational opportunities offered by their employers. Those opportunities could come in the form of community college classes or seminars. Some workers also are motivated by the chance to improve other parts of their lives, such as their health. Therefore, company-paid gym memberships and exercise classes create a motivational atmosphere in the workplace.

Baking Industry In The United States

In 1989, the baking industry introduced 1,155 new bakery products.


The baking industry in the United States consists of four segments: retail, wholesale, in-store and food service. Wholesale bakeries are the backbone of this industry.


Retail


A retail bakery is a low-volume facility, where a variety of baked goods are produced and sold to consumers from the same location. Many retail bakeries are now offering whole-grain and multigrain breads, but flavor continues to be a priority among retail bakery consumers.


Wholesale


The wholesale baking industry sector consists of three segments: cake, bread and related products, frozen bakery products and crackers and cookies. A wholesale bakery is typically equipped with extensive production facilities and reaches consumers through retail locations, such as grocery stores and food stores.


In-Store and Food Service


In-store bakeries are found in grocery stores and are relatively small but offer a substantial range of fresh baked products, with increasing amounts of whole-grain breads being produced. Baked goods in the food service sector are those served in restaurants and cafeterias, and they are generally produced by a wholesale bakery.


Trends


The weak economy associated with the past decade and a half has reduced retail bakery sales, as well as sales for in-store bakeries and food service companies. Today's consumers prefer to purchase their baked goods at wholesale club stores.

Ebt Card Restrictions

EBT cards can be used to buy items in a grocery store, but there are some limitations.


Electronic Benefit Transfer, or EBT, cards are given to low-income families to buy food through a government-run assistance program called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Since 2004, the EBT card has replaced food stamps in every U.S. state. Food stamps and the EBT card serve the same purpose, but the EBT card gives more privacy to users, as it can be swiped through a credit card reader the same way that a debit or credit card can. Although the EBT card provides more convenience, there are still restrictions in place regarding what the EBT card can be used to purchase.


Toiletries and Paper Products


The goal of the SNAP program is for families to be able to afford to eat even if they are going through hard times. Thus, EBT cards can only be used to purchase food and cannot be used to purchase other household items even if the items may seem like basic necessities. Items such as paper towels, napkins and shampoo can not be purchased with an EBT Card since they are not edible. People must pay for these items with cash, a debit card or a credit card. Families who cannot afford these items can look to food banks in their area that may offer these items for free, or can turn to a local church for donations.


Tobacco, Liquor and Energy Drinks


Tobacco, liquor and beer of any kind cannot be purchased with an EBT card, even in states that sell these items in grocery stores. Cigarettes and tobacco simply do not make the eligible list because they can not be consumed. Although beer and alcohol can be consumed, they are on a listed off banned items mandated by the SNAP program. Some items, such as energy drinks, are tricky to categorize. Energy drinks that have nutritional value on the label the same way that other food and drinks do can be purchased with an EBT card. However, if a particular brand of energy drink advertises itself as a supplement, the Food and Drug Administration does not count it as a food. and therefore it cannot be purchased with an EBT card.


Pet Food


The EBT card can only be used to buy FDA-approved food that people can consume. Pet food is on the EBT card restricted list and must be paid for in another manner. Families may be able to turn to local charities to find food for their pets if they can no longer afford to purchase any. If a family gets in a difficult situation in which they no longer feel financially able to care for a pet, they can also look for a no-kill shelter to turn their pet over to, so another loving family can adopt the animal.


Hot Food


EBT cards are meant to purchase food that can be taken home and prepared. Sometimes grocery stores may sell hot items in the deli, such as chicken or Chinese food. EBT cards cannot be used to purchase these items. Some stores may also have a soft pretzel stand or a fast food restaurant inside them, EBT use is also restricted in these scenarios. There may be some rare cases where disabled, homeless or elderly people can use an EBT card at select restaurants. This varies state to state. Anyone who is new to receiving EBT benefits should speak to a state worker in his area to see if he qualifies.

What Is Xocai Chocolate

White chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate--there are many types of chocolate. But what exactly is Xocai chocolate? According to the official Xocai website, it is a healthy Belgian alternative chocolate, and unlike other "healthy" chocolates, it apparently tastes quite good. But where did it come from? How is it good for you? And where can you get some? Add this to my Recipe Box.

The Process


According to the Xocai chocolate website (see Resources), Xocai (pronounced "sho-sigh") chocolate is "produced with non-alkalized, non-lecithin zed cacao pepper, antioxidants, combined with Acai berries and blueberries." It is made with a cold process, in contrast to the heat processes of other chocolates, which helps to preserve the antioxidants and make Xocai a "healthy" chocolate.


Health Benefits


According to claims made by Xocai producers and distributors, Xocai chocolate can lower cholesterol, fight cavities, boost energy, protect against stroke and improve libido. It is, however, the antioxidants in Xocai that provide the most benefit. Antioxidants called flavanoids are naturally present in dark chocolate. Raw cocoa, a major ingredient, also contains powerful antioxidants. The makers have also cut out all waxes, refined sugars and bad fats.


According to Dr. Richard Cutler, former Director of the Anti-Aging Research department in Washington, D.C., "The amount of antioxidants you maintain in your body is directly proportional to how long and healthy you will live."


Founders


Andrew and Jeanette Brooks founded Xocai. According to the official bio, Mr. Brooks graduated from the University of Calgary with Spanish and Business degrees, but soon became interested in the fields of diabetes and obesity, and founded a health and distribution company in western Canada. Mrs. Brooks graduated from Brigham Young University. She founded the Yurika Foods Corporation and directed the company's product development, marketing and production of publications. She is responsible for the packaging, imaging and marketing of Xocai (see Resources).


Xocai Products


Xocai chocolate comes in a wide range of forms: nuggets, power squares, cookies, protein bars, sipping "xocolate" and "xobiotic" squares.


Availability


Xocai chocolate products were launched in January 2009 and are now available in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. However, they are not available in shops, and can be purchased only through distributors.

When To Grow Fruit & Vegetables

Knowing when to grow and plant fruits and vegetables is the first step toward a successful harvest.


Knowing when to grow fruits and vegetables is an important factor in having a successful harvest. There are many factors that affect when you can or should grow certain types of fruits and vegetables and being aware of all of these factors will greatly affect the outcome of your garden. Having your own garden or orchard is a way of cutting down on food costs, as well as leaving you with greater control over the growing quality and conditions of your food. Does this Spark an idea?


Season


The planting season runs for only a few months of the year to a year-round growing season, depending on your location. Often spring is the start of the growing or planting season, and fall is the end of the growing and harvest season. In some places, however, winter-time growing using covered gardens is possible with cold-hardy vegetables.


Regional Climate


Regional climate has one of the strongest influences on when fruits and vegetables are grown. The warmer the climate, the longer the growing season. However, temperature is not the only thing that affects growth options for plants. Other factors include inclement weather or severity in temperature fluctuations. In some climates, there is a drastic change between daytime and evening temperatures that make it difficult to grow certain plants. Inclement weather such as storm or hurricane seasons also affect when fruits and vegetables are planted or grown.


Type of Plant


Separate plants into warm- or cold-weather plants. Warm-weather plants such as tomatoes, basil and cucumbers grow best when there have been steadily warm temperatures for sometime. As well, the chance of frost must have passed or be far away enough so that there is sufficient growing time available. Cold weather plants such as cabbage, kale and peas are best suited to cooler climates and temperatures. These plants can be grown earlier or later in the growing season, as in some cases, a light frost actually improves the taste of some plants.


Time of Day


Transplant vegetable seedlings, fruit seedlings or even fruit trees either early in the day, or towards the end of the day. Planting seedlings at the height of heat often causes undue stress to the plant, as the high temperatures and the shock of the transplant creates a longer transition period for the plant.

Pickle Pigs Feet

Pickling things such as vegetables, eggs and even pig's feet is a popular practice among many homes because it preserves food thus saving money. Pickled pigs feet are an acquired taste that you can find in many homes in the deep South. By following a few simple steps, you can make better tasting pickled pig's feet right in your own kitchen instead of searching the store shelves for this tasty appetizer. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Clean and scrape the pig's feet completely. Put salt on the pig's feet and put them in the refrigerator at least 4 hours.


2. Remove the pig's feet from the refrigerator and clean off all the salt. Add the pig's feet to a Dutch oven and fill with water, making sure the water covers the pig's feet thoroughly because the pig's feet will swell when cooking.


3. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then cover and reduce heat to low cooking for about an hour and a half. Check the pig's feet to make sure they do not overcook. They should be tender but the meat should still be attached to the bone.


4. Take the pig's feet out of the Dutch oven, rinse them off and pour out all of the water. Clean the Dutch oven thoroughly.


5. Pour the vinegar into the Dutch oven and mix in the rest of the ingredients. After bringing the vinegar mixture to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes.


6. Place the pig's feet into the pickling vinegar mixture. Bring the pig's feet and vinegar mixture to a boil.


7. Remove the pig's feet from the Dutch oven and place into jars. Pour the vinegar mixture into the jars making sure you cover the pig's feet completely. Screw on the lids to the jars tightly and put in a cool place for at least 3 days to a week before opening the jars.

Get A License For A Small Homebased Business

Home businesses that prepare food may require a state license.


Depending on the type of home-based business you choose to run, you may need a variety of licenses to ensure that your business is legally compliant with federal, state and local law. Business license requirements vary from state to state and even from county to county, which can make the process quite complicated, even for a small business. However, by understanding get started with your research, you can make getting licenses for your home-based business much easier.


Instructions


1. Choose a business name and apply for a fictitious business name certificate, if required by your state. You may need this certificate for officially registering your business name before you can apply for additional licenses for your business, according to SCORE, a national volunteer organization that offers counseling to small-business owners. Check to see if your state requires a fictitious name certificate and which office to contact to obtain one (see Resource).


2. Find out if you require a federal license for your business. Not all businesses require a federal license. Some examples of those that require one are businesses that brew or distribute alcohol, businesses that sell firearms or ammunition and businesses that give investment advice, according to the Business.gov website.


3. Contact your local government to find out if your small, home-based business requires state certification or inspection, suggests SCORE. If you are a real estate agent, building contractor, auto mechanic or private investigator, you may need educational certification to receive a state license for your business. Ask about a state license if you plan to offer child care or prepare food products. These types of businesses usually require state inspection to ensure that your business meets state health codes, notes SCORE.


4. Contact your state franchise tax board if you plan to run a retail business. Retail sales require the payment of state sales tax in most states, according to SCORE. Call the county clerk's office for your area to find out the requirements for a local business license. Local license applications often have to be filed in person, so make sure you understand prepare the appropriate paperwork and application fees to spare yourself the frustration of having to come back later.

Time Needed To Smoke A Turkey

A great alternative to the tried and true roasted turkey is smoked turkey. Although it's not hard to smoke a turkey, it does take some patience. But it's worth the time because the finished bird will be moist and delicious. There are different kinds of smokers, but they all basically work alike; they cook slowly and infuse the taste of smoke into the meat. The time needed to smoke a turkey includes time for preparing the turkey itself, preparing the wood chips and the smoker, and the actual cooking time. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Preparation


Prepare a 12- to 14-pound turkey by thawing and washing out the inside of the cavity. Larger birds can be smoked, but because they take a long time, often the drumsticks and wings will be cooked long before the rest of the bird is ready. For especially moist results, soak the turkey in a five-gallon pail with a brine made of one cup of kosher salt and enough water to cover the bird. Some cooks add flavoring to the brine such as apple or orange chunks; however, you don't want to cover up the smoky taste.


Another part of the preparation is to soak, overnight, the chunks of wood or wood chips you will use. One 10-pound bag will be sufficient.


Prepare the smoker by placing charcoal in the firebox and soaking it with starting fluid. Ignite the charcoal and allow the coals to turn gray. Grease the rack that the turkey will cook on with non-stick cooking spray. If your smoker uses a water bowl, fill the bowl with water and place it in the smoker. Take the turkey out of the brine solution and pat dry with paper towels, and then place the bird in the smoker. Add some of the soaked wood chips directly onto the charcoal and close the smoker.


Smoking process


When you no longer see any smoke coming out from the smoker, open the smoker and add more wood chips. Before adding new chips, give the charcoal a stir to bring some of the bottom pieces to the top. Add some more wood and close the smoker until more wood is needed. Avoid opening the smoker to check to see how the bird is doing between adding wood chips.


A 14- to 16-pound turkey needs to be smoked four to six hours or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thigh reads 165 degrees F. Allow the turkey to set for an hour before carving.

Deepfry A Turkey

Instructions


1. Remove the neck and giblets from the turkey cavity and rinse the inside and outside of the bird.


2. Dry the turkey well, inside and out, with paper towels.


3. Fold the wings of the turkey behind the bird's shoulders and then remove the hock lock. Place turkey on a large wire rack.


4. Place a 10- to 12-gallon stockpot on a 12-inch propane gas burner with at least 100,000 BTUs and fill with vegetable oil. Light fire and heat oil to 390 degrees F.


5. Lower the well-dried turkey, breast first, into a deep-frying basket. Put on oven mitts and gently lower the basket into the oil.


6. Lift up the turkey and dip it into the oil again three or four times so the oil adjusts to the temperature of the turkey.


7. Fry the turkey while keeping the oil temperature as close to 365 degrees F as possible. Fry for about three and a half minutes per pound, until meat is golden and a deep-frying thermometer in the thickest part of the turkey thigh registers 175 degrees F.


8. Lift basket out of oil and drain turkey, including the cavity, in a roasting pan. Carve and serve after the turkey has cooled for 20 minutes.

Do The Rice Diet

Use the rice diet to lose weight.


The rice diet is a low-fat and low-salt diet aimed at preventing hypertension, obesity, heart disease and diabetes. The rice diet is considered a fairly strict regimen and usually results in rapid weight loss if the diet is followed correctly. Several books have been published on the rice diet, including "The Rice Diet Solution." The program consists mostly of foods that are high in fiber, whole grains, fruit and vegetables.


Instructions


1. Consume only about 800 calories and 50 mg of sodium on the first day. You can calculate how many calories you are consuming at The Daily Plate (see Resources section). Eat two starches, like rice and toast, and two in-season fruits for breakfast, lunch and dinner.


2. Consume 1,100 calories a day and 300 mg of sodium per day for the rest of the week. For breakfast each day, eat toast, one in-season fruit and one nonfat yogurt. For lunch and dinner, you can eat three starches, like rice and toast or pasta, three in-season vegetables and one in-season fruit.


3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 during the second week, until the last day of the week. On the last day, you can consume 1,200 calories and 500 mg of sodium. For breakfast, eat toast and rice and one in-season fruit. For lunch, eat three starches, like toast, rice and pasta, three in-season vegetables, and one in-season fruit. For dinner, eat three starches, like toast, rice and pasta, three proteins, like lean chicken, lean pork and low-sodium black beans, three in-season vegetables, and one in-season fruit.


4. Eat 800 calories and 50 mg of sodium as in step 1 for the next few weeks. For the four days following, eat 1,100 calories a day and 300 mg of sodium per day as in step 2. During the final two days of the diet, consume 1,200 calories and 500 mg of sodium as in step 3. Each week, you may add 200 calories to your diet per week.


5. Stop adding 200 calories per week to the diet when you stop losing weight. This weekly regimen is a diet that you can stay on for as long as you like.

Tofu


Tofu, which is also know as soybean curd, is made from soy milk and is a staple in many vegetarian diets. You can prepare tofu in a number of ways -- baked, fried, deep fried, raw. Spice or arrange tofu for nearly any palate. Use tofu to make burgers, ice cream, burritos and countless other foods. Tofu is available fresh or processed, but regardless of its origin, it is fairly high in protein and so is important for vegetarians who might not get the protein that is contained in most meats.


Beans


Beans are an essential vegetarian food. Several common varieties are cheap and easy to prepare, and beans also are a good source of protein. Black beans, kidney beans and pinto beans are some common options that also are fairly high in fiber. Use beans in soup or chili, mashed, eaten on their own, in patties and served as burgers, in salads or served in a burrito or taco, among other options.


Grains


Grains are a staple of any vegetarian diet, but not all are created equal. Quinoa, wild rice and millet are good choices because they are fairly low in calories but high in fiber, riboflavin, iron, zinc and vitamin B6 -- all of which are important for daily health. Use grains on their own as part of a meal -- or sometimes as a meal in themselves -- or use them in soups, salads and snack mixes.


Fruits and Vegetables


Fruits and vegetables are important foods for vegetarians. While most fruits and vegetables will yield health benefits, vary choices because different types will offer different benefits. Eat three servings of fruits and four servings of vegetables each day from raw or cooked sources, or even from juices. Prepare fruits and vegetables in many ways -- although when it comes to vegetables, prepare them raw or steamed to get the most health benefit because the vegetables will retain their nutrients.
