Water that smells like rotten eggs has been exposed to hydrogen sulfide.

Bacteria


Water that smells like rotten eggs is caused when hydrogen sulfide is dissolved in the water. Sulfur-reducing bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide. If the bacteria are living in your water heater, the smell will get into your house water, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.


Causes


Sulfur-reducing bacteria infest a water heater when the heater has been turned off for a while or when the temperature is kept below 140 degrees, according to the Ohio State University Extension. If your water heater contains a magnesium rod, you are at greater risk for the bacteria to develop.


Solution


You can kill the bacteria in the water heater by turning the temperature up to over 140 degrees and leaving it there for several hours. Flush out the water that smells like rotten eggs and allow the heater to fill again. To stop the bacteria and foul smell from returning, you might need to replace the magnesium rod in your water heater. Consult a plumbing professional before making any alterations to the unit.

3. Fight fairly. This means no nasty name calling, no hitting, spitting, breaking dishes or anything else. Just say what you have to say, get it off your chest and be sure that you don't put him down while you are doing it. If you want your husband to be crushed by the woman he loves, then so be it, but you're ruining the man you fell in love with and he may actually start to fall out of love with you and you could lose him all together.


4. Say I love you. Say it often, leave special notes around. Remind your husband how special he is to you.


5. Go out of your way to do something nice for him every day. If you find you never have the time, start making some fast. These gestures wont go unnoticed and it may even inspire him to do something nice for you.


6. Don't withhold affection. This goes for hugs, kisses and sex. Its good for both of you so kiss him often!


7. Teamwork. You are a team. Everything about you as a couple is a team. If you can pitch in and help raking the yard do it. If you help him with his chores, he'll be more likely to help you with yours - without even being asked!


8. Respect your husband in front of others and at home. Don't call your mommy or sister every time your husband does something "stupid". Keep it to yourself. There's nothing cool about putting your husband down or talking about him. What goes on between the two of you should stay that way.

Instructions


Avocado-Based Conditioner

2. Crush the avocado and gradually add coconut milk, blending as you pour. Add more milk until the consistency is smooth and resembles conditioner.


3. Apply the mixture to your hair and thoroughly work into scalp. Leave the conditioner on for 15 minutes, then rinse and shampoo.


Hot Oil Treatment


4. Mix a 1/2 cup of soybean oil or sunflower oil and a 1/2 cup of dried organic rosemary in a pan. Simmer over low heat. Use a strainer to get rid of any lumps.


5. Apply the oil mixture to your entire head, working it into the scalp and the ends of your hair. Hot oil treatments condition the hair and scalp, which prevents flaking or dandruff. The oil also strengthens hair and promotes hair growth.


6. Wrap your hair tightly against your scalp with plastic wrap. Place a warm towel on top of the wrap to lock in heat. Let the mixture settle in your hair for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.


Natural Shampoo


7. Combine 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup liquid castile soap and a 1/2 teaspoon of sunflower or coconut oil and store in a plastic shampoo bottle. Coconut oil is ideal to use in shampoos because it reduces protein loss and penetrates deeply into the hair.


8. Wet hair thoroughly and apply a generous amount of shampoo. Work the shampoo from the roots of the your hair to the ends.


9. Lather well and then rinse. If you have extremely thick or greasy hair, you may want to shampoo a second time.

Farmhouse tourism in Italy offers cultural immersion opportunities that help to generate the funds necessary for the continuance of organic farming and ecotourism.


World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF)


Thirty years after this organization sprung to life in the United Kingdom in 1971, Italy joined, eventually adding 321 organic farms to a list of thousands throughout the world that offer opportunities in organic and biodynamic sustainability. The program works through volunteers, called "WWOOFers," who provide help to working farms in exchange for accommodation and food. Typical volunteer work through WWOOF Italy often includes fruit picking and assisting in olive oil and cheese production, though work varies from farm to farm.


WWOOF Travel and Insurance


WWOOFers are responsible for their own passports and visas and are not required to have a work visa to participate. Italian railways and bus services provide the most economical form of transportation; first- and second-class passes can be purchased through Eurail that offer various itineraries and discounts for parties of two to five people. WWOOF farms are insured by the organization and an annual membership fee of 25 euros is required, which pays for "accident, illness, health care, and third party civil liabilities" at every registered farmstead.

Renting an Italian farmhouse may be the perfect option for those seeking independent living and cultural submersion with agricultural opportunities as a possibility. Italian farmhouse rentals may include working farms or nonworking farms and most of the organizations that offer rentals do so in a particular regional area. Cooking Times For Meat Per Pound

Whether you bake, broil, roast or grill meat, cook it thoroughly before you serve it.


To cook meat properly you must plan your cooking time according to the type of meat and the meat's weight. The Center for Disease Control reminds consumers that trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, can pass to people who eat raw or undercooked meat. Instructions


Beef, Lamb and Venison


1. Cook a 4 to 6 lb. rib roast with the bone left in at 325 degrees for 32 to 34 minutes to achieve a well-done roast. If the roast has no bone, add 5 to 8 minutes per lb. to these times.


2. For a 3/4-inch steak, plan to grill or broil it for 6 to 7 minutes on each side to make a medium cooked steak.


3. Prepare a stew by simmering a 1 to 1 1/2-inch thick piece of stewing beef for 2 to 3 hours in boiling broth.


Pork


4. Roast pork for 30 minutes in an oven set at 430 degrees.


5. Continue to roast the pork at 320 degrees for an additional 23 minutes for every lb. of pork.


6. Let the meat rest for 30 minutes before carving the pork.


Turkey


7. Cook an 8 to 10 lb. turkey for 30 minutes in a 425 degree oven. Reduce the temperature to 325 degrees and cook it for another 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Uncover it for a final 30 minutes at 400 degrees.


8. Roast a 12 to 14 lb. turkey for 40 minutes in a 425 degree oven. Allow it to continue to cook for another 2 1/2 to 3 hours in a 325 degree oven and top it off for 30 minutes (uncovered) at 400 degrees.


9. If you plan to roast a large 15 to 20 lb. turkey, roast it for 45 minutes at 425 degrees and then leave it in the oven for another 4 to 5 hours at 325 degrees. For the last 30 minutes, uncover it and let it cook in a 400 degree oven.

Start A Food Manufacturing Company

Starting a food business where you make and market your own culinary creations is a dream of many people. A way to make a great amount of profit in the food industry is by becoming a manufacturer. While starting a food manufacturing company will allow you to sell your products to the greatest number of customers possible, it also requires more planning than other types of food businesses.


Instructions


1. Decide what type of food you want to manufacture. You may choose to make and distribute confections, candies, powdered mixes, drinks, or ready-made meals.


2. Obtain a food handler's permit, food manufacturing permit, and food manager's permit from your state's health department. You will also need an assumed name certificate from your county clerk, in addition to filling as a corporation, limited liability corporation (LLC) or limited liability partnership (LLP) in your state.


3. Lease a warehouse space that is at least 1,200 square feet total---this can cost anywhere from $1,000 per month to $1,800 per month. You will likely need to build out the space to the health department's requirements for food manufacturing facilities. Alternatively, rent a commercial kitchen if one is available in your area.


4. Have the facility you're using to manufacture food inspected by the health department so that it can be cleared for use. Keep in mind that you will undergo occasional inspections, so you should make sure you always adhere to the department's guidelines.


5. Determine how you want to package your food products, and ensure that the packaging you choose is not only attractive and good for marketing, but FDA-approved for contact with food. Companies that sell food packaging include CPT Plastics, Ossid, and MeadWestVaco (MWV).


6. Set up a website listing basic information about the products you have available for distribution, your location and contact information. This will help not only consumers who want to research your products, but also distribution companies that are considering setting up an account with you.


7. Contact the food distribution companies in your area, and speak with them about setting up an account. This is essential, because without proper distribution of your products, you'll just be making food that sits around without being sold. Food distribution companies will buy your products in large quantities and then sell them to retail businesses wholesale.

Cook A Burger Patty On A Frying Pan

Cook your burger patties to desired doneness in a frying pan.


Burgers are a key product in the fast food industry. However, burgers are also a dish that is easy to prepare at home. Choose the type of burger to suit your taste. Choices include beef, turkey or vegetarian patties. Add desired toppings, such as mushrooms or tomatoes, to add more flavor to the burger, or just eat it plain. Cooking a burger patty in a frying pan is quick and easy. Start with fresh ground meat or use frozen patties. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Prepare your burger patty. Season your ground meat with your favorite seasoning. Flatten and shape the ground meat to form patties about 1/2 inch thick and match the width to the size of your bun. Or use frozen pre-packaged patties. Do not thaw.


2. Turn on your stovetop burner to medium heat.


3. Place your frying pan on the heat to warm it up for four minutes. Spray the pan with cooking spray if it is not a non-stick pan.


4. Place the patty in the pan and cook until the edges brown.


5. Flip the burger patty once and cook the other side the same length of time it took the first side to brown. Cooking times will vary based on the individual characteristics of your stove and how well done you want the patty cooked.


6. Use a food thermometer to test the internal temperature of a meat patty to verify that it cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit for ground beef, pork, veal and lamb. Test for 165 degrees for ground turkey and chicken.


7. Remove burger patty from the pan.


8. Place the burger patty on a bun and add your preferred condiments.

Uses For Glutinous Rice Flour

Sticky rice, used to make sushi rolls, is the type of rice from which glutinous rice flour is derived.


Glutinous rice flour is also known as sticky rice flour. This useful baking ingredient is gluten and wheat free for folks with allergies. Because of the sticky characteristic of this type of rice flour, the uses for it are specific. It is primarily used in traditional Asian cooking for making dumplings and desserts. When baked with brown sugar, glutinous rice flour forms a gelatin like pastry that has become a staple for Chinese New Year celebrations. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Dumplings


Glutinous rice flour is an essential ingredient in the festive Chinese dumpling called tang yuan. According to Gourmet Garden, tang yuan can be made sweet or savory. A sticky dough is made from glutinous rice flour, oil, sugar, salt, seasonings and water. The dough is rolled into bite size balls. A thumbprint impression is made in the middle where the filling is inserted and the dough is pinched and rolled back into a ball. Common sweet fillings include sesame paste, red bean paste or chopped peanuts with sugar. A savory filling is usually pork. The dumplings are immersed into boiling water until the balls float, about 15 minutes according to Gourmet Garden. Food coloring is often added to create a rainbow of round sweet dumplings that are then served in a sweet ginger soup during holidays.


Dessert Balls


Filling your homemade wraps is a fun activity to do with the kids.


Similar to tang yuan, another Chinese recipe uses glutinous rice flour to create a doughy treat called dim sum. Instead of boiling these balls of sticky dough, they are usually deep fried according to Recipe Gold Mine. The dough, made of glutinous rice flour, potato flour, sugar and salt is rolled until thin sheets are cut from it. Fillings, either sweet or savory, are placed in the middle and the sheets of dough are pinched around them. The goal when frying, according to Recipe Gold Mine, is to achieve a crispy texture on the outside of the ball while maintaining a chewy middle.


Nian Gao


Nian gao, also known as sticky rice cake, is traditionally eaten on Chinese New Year. Though the name infers a cake, this recipe may end up looking more like a gelatinous fruitcake. Dough is made from glutinous rice flour, brown sugar, milk and water. It is placed into a cake pan and then steamed for 45 minutes. The pan is removed and inverted to remove the sticky cake. Before serving, the cake is cut into squares that are then dipped in egg and pan fried until they become crispy, bite size morsels. These bites can be rolled in peanuts or coconut flakes for added flavor.


Mochi


This snack is made from glutinous brown rice flour called mochiko. A mixture of corn syrup, water and sugar is combined and simmered in a saucepan. It is then added to a dry mixture of mochiko and salt to create workable dough. Bite size pieces are cut from the dough and usually cured or frozen until you are ready to bake them. Baking the mochi makes a crispy and chewy cake like snack. Herbs and sweets are added to the dry ingredients before mixing to add flavor.

Philippine Spices

If you're looking for a taste of variety, spices from the Far East may be your answer. Philippine cuisine infuses Western and Asian flavors but contains a subtler taste when compared with other Southeast Asian countries that use very pungent and strong spices. Some of the most widely used Filipino spices are onion, garlic, several variants of peppers and bay leaves, as well as pandan. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Onion and Garlic


Garlic and onion locally grown in the Philippines are smaller and about half in size when compared to Western varieties; however, both Filipino spices tend to have a more pungent and powerful flavor. Saut ing onion and garlic in vegetable oil is an essential step when cooking most Filipino recipes, as it adds more flavor to meat, fish and vegetable dishes.


Garlic in the Philippines comes in a single variety, while onion has two popular types: red and white. Red onion gives dishes more pungency and a sharper onion taste, while white onion has a hint of sweetness and subtle pungency. White onion is ideally used in salads and can be eaten raw.


Peppers


Most Filipino recipes require peppers. Several varieties grow in the country, including several types of bell peppers. Two of the most widely-used chilies in Filipino recipes are the bird's eye -- siling labuyo -- and the green pepper. The green pepper adds a subtle spicy taste, while bird's eye peppers are used for very spicy recipes because of their strong taste. Dishes such as sisig usually include both types.


Bay Leaves


Adobo, one of the most popular dishes in Philippine cuisine, uses bay leaves as a spice. Dried bay leaves have a very strong taste and pungency, meaning the leaves are used moreso for the taste they give to the other food within dishes, rather than to be eaten themselves.


Pandan


Pandan is included in several Philippine-based desserts such as rice cakes. Pandan is a type of leaf, commonly used when cooking white rice to add aroma, taste and color. A dessert, known as buko-pandan -- a combination of shredded coconut meat and pandan-extract mixed with cream -- is a well-known Philippine dish that makes use of the pandan spice.


Ginger


Like in many other Asian dishes, ginger is commonly added to Philippine dishes for spice and aroma. Local ginger root has a strong taste and can add flavor to any type of meat dish; however, just like bay leaf, ginger often remains on the side of the dish as opposed to being consumed. A local version of ginger tea, known as "salabat," is also a popular drink within the Philippines.


Lemongrass


Philippine dishes use lemongrass in two ways: as a spice in stews and other soup-based dishes, as well as an add-on to fried rice. When used as a spice in stews, lemongrass adds sweetness and sourness. Fresh lemongrass has a hint of an onion-like pungency and a sweet taste when raw.

1. Always buy what's in season when choosing fresh fruits and vegetables. In-season produce is plentiful and inexpensive. The best deals and the best produce can often be found at your local farmer's market. Check your local paper for grocery store bargains. When you find a good deal, buy in bulk. Can or freeze anything you can't use this week.


2. Don't overlook eggs. Few foods pack the protein punch that eggs do. Scramble some up, sauté some of those veggies that you picked up at the farmer's market, and make a delicious omelet. Make cinnamon French toast, and top it with some sliced peaches or apples. Eggs aren't just for breakfast any more, either. Whip some up for a quick and easy dinner.


3. Pick up some whole wheat pasta, which is low in cost and high in nutritional value. Toss it with prepared pasta sauce or make your own. Add sautéed mushrooms and garlic to gove a little more punch to the sauce. Top it off with some steamed veggies to stretch this bargain meal even further.


4. Stock up on potatoes. Bake them, stuff them with steamed broccoli, and melt cheese over the top for a filling entree. Make potato pancakes. Mash them, and make Shepherd's pie. There are countless options for using inexpensive potatoes to create nutritious, filling meals.


5. Rely on beans as the basis for a variety of dishes. Cook up a pot of brown rice and serve with kidney or black beans for a satisfying vegetarian entrée. Add salsa for spice, and serve with flour or corn tortillas. Make up a big pot of vegetarian chili. Coupled with a green salad and crunchy bread, any of these can become a complete meal.


6. Use meat as a condiment rather than the focus of a meal. Cut chicken or lean beef into strips, add veggies, and cook up a delicious stir fry. Buy chicken thighs on sale, cook them up, and pull the skin off. Freeze the cooked meat to use in tacos, casseroles, soups or stews.

Roast Boneless Chicken

Roasted boneless chicken breasts are often complemented with a sauce or gravy.


Sometimes it gets annoying to have to contend with all the bones when you are trying to enjoy your chicken. One of the more popular chicken cuts, boneless chicken breasts are versatile and can be cooked in a variety of ways. Roasting the chicken in the oven will result in moist, juicy chicken. Instructions


1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.


2. Coat each chicken breast in the olive oil.


3. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper to taste. Add additional seasonings such as garlic powder, lemon-pepper and dried herbs as you see fit. If the chicken breasts still have the skin on, peel back the skin and season the meat underneath as well as the skin.


4. Line a roasting pan with foil and lay the seasoned chicken in the pan, skin side up if the skin is still attached.


5. Bake the chicken in the oven for about 35 minutes, until the juices run clear when you cut into the chicken. Check with an instant-read food thermometer to make sure each chicken breast has reached at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grill & Marinate Chicken

Grill chicken outdoors for a charcoal-flavored taste.


Chicken is one of the cheapest meats; you can make it in the oven or on the grill. Add flavor to chicken breasts by marinating them before grilling them. Make a marinade using ingredients of your choice to make simple grilled chicken unique. By using different marinades on the chicken, you can have a different taste each time you make it. Instructions


Marinade


1. Make the marinade. In general, a marinade should contain an oil (like olive, canola or sesame oil), an acidic ingredient (like wine or fruit juice) and seasonings like spices, herbs and sauces. Experiment with different flavor combinations to make a unique marinade. Stir all of the ingredients together in a bowl.


2. Wash the chicken breasts in cold water. Use a knife to make a 1- to 2- inch score on the top of the chicken breast so that the marinade soaks into the chicken breast.


3. Place the chicken breast in a casserole dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken. Mix the marinade around so that each piece of chicken is coated. Cover and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on how strongly-flavored the marinade is.


Grilling


4. Clean the grill. Wipe the grate down with cooking oil.


5. Place the charcoal briquettes in the center of the grill and add lighter fluid. Light the coals; allow the coals to flame, then die down to a moderate heat and develop an ash coating. Spread out the coals so that there are two mounds, one on each side of the grill.


6. Place the chicken on the grill in the middle of the two mounds. Cook 10 to 25 minutes per side. Flip each piece of chicken over once during grilling. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest park of the chicken breasts to read the internal temperature; for safety, the internal temperature of a skinless, boneless chicken breast must reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit.


7. Move the chicken breasts over the hot coals when the internal temperature approaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Brown the outer meat of the chicken breast over the hot coals.


8. Remove the chicken from the heat and let it sit for five minutes before serving.

How Long To Bake A Chicken

A chicken is cooked when its internal temperature reaches 165 degrees.


The best way to determine when your chicken is done is to check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer. Chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Place the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat, but do not allow it to touch the bone. An alternative method is to pierce the chicken and observe the juices and meat. Whole Chicken


A whole fryer or broiler chicken will take about 2 hours to cook in the oven at 350 degrees. Season your chicken as desired and place in a roaster pan. Cover it tightly and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Remove the cover and finish baking for 15 more minutes. Check doneness with a meat thermometer.


Chicken Breasts


Bake seasoned chicken breasts in a casserole dish at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Boneless breasts will be done in about 45 minutes. Check with a meat thermometer or be sure that juices run clear.


Chicken Legs, Thighs and Wings


Bake chicken legs and thighs for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Wings will take about 25 to 30 minutes. Chicken legs, thighs, and wings cook faster than the larger bone-in breasts. Chicken thigh and leg quarters will take longer if cooked as one piece--about 1 hour. Check doneness with a meat thermometer.

Make Parboiled Rice

Enjoy parboiled rice with its unsticky, fluffy texture.


Rice connoisseurs may choose parboiled rice for its fluffy texture, with each kernel cooking delicately and separate from the others. Because of the processing method of parboiled rice, more nutrients stay in the rice kernels and it is easier to digest than the nuttier brown rice, according to the RiceGourmet website. Favored by some eastern countries, parboiled rice may take slightly longer to cook than white or brown rice. Knowing cook parboiled rice is essential. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Measure and pour the water and salt into the stockpot. Cover the pot and place it onto the stove top. Set the burner to high, and boil the water.


2. Once the water has come to a full boil, remove the lid from the pot and slowly sprinkle the parboiled rice into the boiling water. Add the rice slowly so that the water maintains its boil.


3. Reduce the heat to medium-high, and boil the rice uncovered for 20 minutes. Stir the rice every two to three minutes while it boils.


4. Remove the pot from the stovetop after the allotted time has elapsed and pour the hot water and rice into the metal sieve. Cover the sieve with the cheesecloth and set it aside.


5. Pour about 4 cups of boiling water into the stockpot and place the stockpot on the counter. Set the metal sieve over the boiling water in the stockpot, without the sieve touching the water. Place the stockpot cover on the stockpot over the rice in the sieve.


6. Leave the rice undisturbed for approximately 15 minutes.


7. Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Serve the rice immediately.

Grocery stores employ hundreds of thousands of cashiers and stock clerks.

Cashiers and Stock Clerks

First-line managers are usually responsible for training employees and creating their work schedules. The managers place orders to keep their departments stocked with goods and they ensure that sale prices are accurate. Grocery stores are among the top employers of first-line managers; they employed about 130,260 of the managers in 2010. Their mean salary that year was $39,130, according to the BLS.


Other Workers

Deepfry Meat In Peanut Oil

Deep frying meats in peanut oil provides a healthier alternative to other cooking oils.


Deep-frying involves submerging food in hot oil inside a deep-fryer, cooking it at a faster rate than most conventional frying methods. Frying meats in peanut oil is a healthy alternative to vegetable oil because it is low in cholesterol. Deep-frying seals in the meat juices -- enhancing meat flavor -- and makes the skin crisp. Choose an appropriate deep-fryer tool before frying meats in peanut oil. Always use caution when working with high heating temperatures. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Use a deep-fryer unit when cooking meats. If frying indoors, choose an electric deep-fry cooker. If frying outside, use a propane deep-fryer cooker (because the propane cooker will need gas to operate). Assemble necessary propane fryer tools before operating, including a propane burner, a 30- to 60-qt. heavy pot, a propane gas tank, a basket stand and a lifting hook.


2. Determine the amount of peanut oil needed to fry your preferred meat. Read the deep-fryer's operational guide to get the right oil in ounces/gallons per pound of meat. For instance, a 10- to 15-lb. turkey will require three to five gallons of peanut oil to fry.


3. Turn the deep fryer on, and set it to the highest temperature to initiate the boil. Unrefined peanut oil has a smoke point of 320 degrees Fahrenheit. When cooking your desired meat, set the temperature anywhere between 325 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a thermostat to gauge the temperature if the fryer unit does not have a thermostat control.


4. Once the peanut oil reaches your desired temperature, drop the basket stand into the deep-fryer. Gently insert the meat into the deep fryer basket by tongs. Use caution when placing meat into the fryer basket; wear oven mitts to safeguard your hands against the hot oil.


5. After five to 10 minutes, lift the meat up by tongs out from the fryer. Dip the meat back into the oil again three or four times to readjust and disperse the oil temperature evenly around the meat. Insert the meat back into the deep-fryer.


6. Continue to fry your meat for as long as cooking direction recommends. According to Gumbo Pages, it generally takes three and a half minutes per pound to finish frying, or until the meat is golden-brown and the skin is crisp. Inject a meat thermometer to determine the doneness of the meat at the end of the cooking time.


7. Remove the meat by tongs once the frying process is complete. Lift the basket out by the tongs first and allow the peanut oil to drain into a roasting pan. Serve after the meat has cooled for 20 minutes.

They are a religious group living in the U.S. Their lives are centered around their Christian beliefs, family, humility and their separation from the rest of society. The way they dress and live is dictated by their church. Still, the people outside of the community respect the simple aspects of their lives. People especially love the wholesome quality of their foods. There are many popular bread recipes that are used by "outsiders," such as hillbilly bread, angel biscuits and their basic breads. Instructions


1. Receive the Amish friendship bread starter from a friend. Before you have finished making your bread, you will have starter to give away to other friends. You can, however, make your own starter (see Resources).


2. Stir the starter once on the second, third and fourth days after receiving it. Add 1 cup each milk, flour and white sugar, and stir, on the fifth day. Stir the starter once on days six, seven, eight and nine. On day 10, add 1 cup each milk, flour and white sugar. Divide the mixture into four (nonmetal) containers of 1 cup each. Give three of the containers, with instructions and the recipe, to three friends and keep one container for your own bread.


3. Mix together 2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1¼ tsp. baking powder, ½ tsp. baking soda, 1 tsp. cinnamon and ½ tsp. salt.


4. Combine the bread starter, 2/3 cup oil, three beaten eggs and 1 tsp. vanilla in a separate nonmetal bowl. Mix with a plastic spoon, as metal reacts adversely with the starter.


5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix, until the mixture is well blended.


6. Rub oil on the inside of two loaf pans and sprinkle them with sugar. Divide the bread batter between the loaf pans.


7. Bake the Amish friendship bread in a preheated 325 degree F oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Check the doneness by poking a toothpick in the center of the bread. If it comes out clean, the bread is done.


8. Remove the bread from the loaf pans and cool.

Cooked farina is usually served with milk and sugar for breakfast.


More likely than not you have eaten farina in the form of a hot porridge cereal on a cold winter morning. Farina is more commonly known by the names of top brand companies that make it. The quick-cooking ground wheat cereal comes enriched with B vitamins and is a good source of carbohydrates and protein. Although most commonly made to eat as a hot cereal, farina has other uses, such as helping quick-bread dough cook faster and extending ground meat mixtures. Farina is best cooked in a pot on the stove. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Boil 3 cups of water on the stove in a pot. Add 1 tsp. of salt to the water.


2. Start stirring the water when it begins to boil and slowly add 1 cup of farina into the water. Pour the farina in very slowly, just a little bit at a time, stirring constantly.


3. Continue stirring the farina once you have added all of it into the water. Reduce the heat to low.


4. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, stirring frequently until the farina reaches the desired thickness. Pour into a bowl and serve hot.

Cook Smoked Wild Turkey

Smoked wild turkey makes a savory meal.


Smoking meat was once employed out of necessity to preserve it. The tradition has carried through the refrigerator age because smoking meat can add a flavor unlike that achieved by cooking meat any other way. Smoked turkey is no exception. A brine mixture is used before smoking the turkey to keep the turkey moist through the smoking process, help the seasoning to spread evenly and reduce the "gamy" flavor often associated with wild birds. The seasoning applied to the turkey is intended to enhance the turkey's flavor. Add this to my Recipe Box.


Instructions


1. Immerse turkey breasts in brine mixture. Divinedinnerparty.com recommends mixing 5 quarts water, 1/2 cup salt, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce and 1 tsp. soy sauce for a brine mixture for 24 hours. Drain and dry the turkey thoroughly.


2. Season the turkey breast before smoking. Use your favorite seasoning, or use Missouri Department of Conservation staff member Mark Goodwin's favorite recipe for two turkey breasts: mix 1/4 cup lemon pepper, 1 tbsp. garlic powder, 1 tsp. dry mustard, 1 tsp. paprika and 1/4 tsp. onion powder. Sprinkle and rub both sides of the turkey breasts with the mixture until liberally covered. Refrigerate breasts, covered, in a container overnight, or at least eight hours.


3. Wrap the turkey breasts in strips of bacon held in place with toothpicks. Cover the breasts entirely with bacon, which will prevent the outer layer from drying out and browning through the smoking process.


4. Place both pieces of prepared meat on a smoker, which should include a pan of water above the coals to provide moist heat. Stick a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the turkey breast.


5. Remove the meat from the smoker when the breast's internal temperature reaches 150 degrees--- usually after three or four hours. Overcooking the meat will dry it out, so don't cook to the usually recommended 180 degrees for domestic foul.


6. Remove the bacon from the turkey breasts, and wrap the breasts in multiple layers of aluminum foil, then wrap the aluminum foil in a bath towel. Place the insulated turkey breasts in a small cooler. The meat will continue to cook slightly in the aluminum foil, which will allow the meat to retain its moisture while cooling.


7. Cut the meat across the grain in 1/2-inch strips when ready to serve.

Scrub baking potato and wrap loosely in wax paper. Microwave 4-5 minutes on high. Serve with sour cream and Rye Krisp.


3. Instead of French toast with syrup and butter, try this:2 whole-grain waffles with 2 tbsp. low-sugar jam.Pop frozen whole-grain waffles in toaster. Spread with strawberry low-sugar jam.


4. Instead of a hot fudge sundae, try this:1 cup no-sugar-added ice cream (or)1 cup sugar-free Jell-O with 2 tbsp. real whipped creamPrepare Jell-O as directed on package. While it sets, pour one container of whipped cream into mixing bowl, and use electric mixer to beat until whipped cream forms. Turn into smaller bowl, cover and use as needed.


5. Instead of spaghetti with clam sauce and bread sticks, try this:Whole-grain rotini pasta with red sauce, green salad and Rye Krisp.Prepare 8 oz. whole grain rotini as directed on package. Heat 1 cup of spaghetti sauce from jar. Drain pasta and pour sauce over. Serve with green salad and Rye Krisp.

Coconut oil has been called the "healthiest dietary oil on earth," with a wide range of benefits attached to its name. Coconut oil can be used as toothpaste when mixed with baking soda, as a moisturizing makeup remover, and as lip balm. With the latter two of these household items it is not necessary to mix the coconut oil with anything to get results: Just apply it to a cotton swab and swipe it over eyes to remove makeup, and lips to moisturize. It can also be used like a lubricant on household items such as locks, bicycle chains, and squeaky door or cabinet hinges. Cook Substituting Rice Flour For Wheat Flour

Using rice flour in baking gives the final product a distinctly different texture than using wheat flour. Rice flour tends to make baked goods crumbly. As a result, you should not replace all of the wheat flour in a recipe with rice flour if you can possibly avoid it. Instead, substitute rice flour for approximately one-fourth of the wheat flour. This solution does not work in some cases, however. If you do not eat gluten, for example, you should eliminate the wheat flour completely. The best way to do so is to use primarily rice flour with two other gluten-free flours mixed in to improve the texture. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions


1. Divide the total amount of wheat flour you wish to replace by 3. For example, if your recipe calls for 6 cups of wheat flour, divide that by 3 for a result of 2.


2. Multiply the number you calculated by 2 to determine the amount of rice flour you should add to your mix. In this example, you would multiply 2 by 2 for a total of 4 cups of rice flour.


3. Multiply the number you calculated by 2/3 to determine the amount of potato starch flour you should add to your mix. In this example, you would multiply 2 by 2/3 for a total of 1-1/3 cups of potato starch flour.


4. Multiply the number you calculated by 1/3 to determine the amount of tapioca flour you should add to your mix. In this example, you would multiply 2 by 1/3 for a total of 2/3 cup of tapioca flour. You may have noticed that you now have exactly the original amount of flour; 4 cups of rice flour plus 1-1/3 cups of potato starch flour plus 2/3 cup of tapioca flour is equal to 6 cups of flour, which is the amount of wheat flour you were replacing.


5. Mix together the rice flour, potato starch flour and tapioca flour to blend them thoroughly. Use this blend to replace the wheat flour in your recipe.

Field Dress Turkeys

Americans have been in love with eating turkey since that first Thanksgiving celebration at Plymouth Plantation in 1621. Most people cart their frozen turkeys home from the supermarket, but hunters know the joy of bagging their own wild birds. There are many delicious recipes for cooking wild turkeys. However, before you pull out those cookbooks, be certain that you have properly field dressed that bird.


Instructions


Field Dress Wild Turkeys


1. Tag the turkey. Leave the tag on the turkey during the field dressing process.


2. Dip the bird into hot water and pluck the turkey's feathers. Use this method when you plan to roast, smoke or deep-fry a whole bird.


3. Skin the bird when you intend to fry or grill the breast fillets.


4. Insert a sharp knife into the point of the turkey breast and cut between the tail and the breast point. Cut from one leg to the other.


5. Pull the turkey's back and breast apart.


6. Insert your hand into the body cavity between the intestines and the back. Extract the lungs, liver and heart. The guts will come out with them.


7. Rinse the bird with clean water inside and out. Let the body cavity drain. A 5-gallon bucket will come in handy for this task.


8. Split open the neck and remove the windpipe, esophagus and crop.


9. Clean all of the blood out of the body cavity.


10. Put ice into the body cavity to keep the carcass cool.


11. Place the carcass in a large, unscented plastic bag. Put the bag into an ice-filled cooler. Keep it iced until you can get it home and freeze it.

Quick Method For Thawing Frozen Bread Dough

Ever feel the urge to have freshly baked bread for a meal or a dinner party, only to discover that the only dough in your house is frozen solid? There are several ways to fast-thaw your frozen dough so that you are not stuck waiting the typical four to five hours it takes for bread to traditionally defrost to room temperature. Soaking


Put your frozen bread dough in a large sealed bag. Fill your sink full of hot water, then place the dough in the water. You may have to change the water a few times if the frozen bread makes the water too cool. Make sure the bag is sealed against the water. This method can cut the thawing time in half, but be careful that the water is not so hot that you activate the yeast in the dough!


Heating


Turn your oven to its lowest setting, no more than 175 degrees, and put the bread in the oven on a cookie sheet. If you take the loaves out and turn them every so often you will speed up the defrosting process even more. This process should take an hour or so, but be careful to turn the loaves frequently to avoid uneven defrosting.


Microwave


One way to defrost anything in a hurry is by using the microwave. Place your loaves on a microwave-safe plate and use your auto-defrost button on your microwave. By rotating the bread and checking its progress often, you shall have defrosted bread dough in a short length of time---using the lowest power setting, put the loaf in for 5 to 8 minutes, and repeat this cycle as often as is needed, with 10 to 15 minutes between cycles. This is a great way to quick-defrost bread dough, but with most microwaves you will need to be careful, because some tend to have hot spots that will cause certain parts of your dough to defrost faster than others.

Serve over any kind of pasta. Even if you just have a small amount of a dish left, save it, and at the end of the week, put out all the leftovers for a creative buffet.

Medical ointment. Anointing oil was used in ancient times as a treatment for breathing difficulties, nervous tension, ointment and soothing balms. The Good Samaritan in the Christian Gospel used oil and wine to bind up the wounds of a beaten man. (Luke 10:34) Today Anointing Oils are used in holistic medicines.


Cosmetics


The Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used anointing oils to the head and clothing as a moisturizing perfume. In the Hebrew Scripture, Ruth put on oils after she bathed to meet her future husband.


Aroma Therapy


Aroma therapy uses essential oils for a psychological boost. The same oil that Mary Magdalene used to anoint Jesus before he was crucified, can be used to enhance your well-being. Spikenard, a warm and earthy scent is said to calm the nerves, promote awareness and strengthen the mind.


Rituals


Oil was used and still is used for special consecration services for setting aside someone for special service. It is used in this sense as an object lesson for symbolic procedure of setting apart.


Prayer


Anointing oil is often used as a physical representation of a Spiritual reality. The spiritual reality is the Holy Spirit. We cannot see the Holy Spirit, but the oil represents His work through prayer. The oil in this case can representation liberation, consecration or preparation.

Chemical Energy In Foods

Food contains energy in the chemical bonds that hold the molecules (groups of atoms) together. The human digestive system breaks these bonds, releasing the chemical energy so that it can be converted into other forms.


Types of Energy


The process of breaking down organic matter to release the energy contained within it is known as respiration. Energy can be converted in mechanical energy, in the movements of the body's muscles; electrical energy, in the function of the brain and the central nervous system; chemical energy, in the creation of new chemical bonds and hence new tissues; or thermal energy.


Sources of Chemical Energy


Food contains many different nutrients, but those that contain the most energy are lipids (fats), carbohydrates (molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen) and proteins (strings of amino acids). Energy is stored in the human body as the carbohydrate glycogen in the muscles and liver and in fat reserves.


Dietary Requirements


Regardless of lifestyle, all human beings require a diet that is composed of roughly 55 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent lipids and 15 percent proteins.
