Design An Indian Restaurant

The Indian subcontinent is home to one of the world's most varied and unique cuisines. Opening up an Indian restaurant can be an excellent idea if the timing is right and you have extensive knowledge of Indian foods. An Indian restaurant design should draw in patrons and showcase the aromas and extensive spices found in many Indian dishes.

Instructions

1. Decide on the outside design. A good design should convey the name of the restaurant as well as the type of food served. Use elements of Indian culture in the restaurant sign such as lettering similar to Hindi script. Add in plants in front typical of India in large stone pots. Place a bench outside where patrons can wait to be served during good weather. Provide additional elements that call to mind India in the area surrounding the bench such as a Buddhist statuary.

2. Create a welcoming front desk area. The front desk should have a cash register, a small candy dish for guests to enjoy after the meal, additional seating and design elements that remind patrons of India. Use this area to store printed menus, favorable reviews and information about Indian cuisine that patrons might find useful.

3. Pick out flooring. Restaurant flooring should allow waiters to deliver dishes without risking injury. Consider carpeting with a pattern typical of an Indian region in bright colors that will hide dirt.

4. Decorate the walls. Add paintings of scenes from India such as pictures of the Taj Mahal and photographs of Indian streets. Hang posters on the wall with information about commonly used Indian spices as well as grains specific to Indian cooking such as basmati rice.

5. Purchase tables and chairs. Offer patrons a choice of booths or stand-alone tables. Tables should have a space for placement of traditional Indian dipping sauces to one side and traditional breads such as naan on the other.

6. Buy or design eating utensils. Many Indian foods are eaten with the hands. Others require use of knife and fork. Knives and forks should fit comfortably in a patron's hands. Make sure you have plenty of napkins to allow people to clean their hands.

7. Decide if you would like to offer a buffet. A buffet table is an easy way to attract patrons and offer specific food items. Consider offering a buffet during the afternoon to help attract a lunch crowd. The buffet table should have a way of keeping foods hot and cold. Make sure that you have storage for plates. Consider allowing space to place a small description of the dish in front. Americans may not be familiar with all aspects of Indian cuisine. Help them explore it with good information.
