If you want to attend a cooking school, whether its to become a chef or to prepare meals for people with special dietary needs, you can study in United Tribes Technical College. This is the only school in Bismark, North Dakota that offers a program in the culinary arts. The school is owned and operated by tribal people to benefit people from different tribal nations. The courses are also available for students to complete in the school or online.


Course


United Tribes Technical College's Nutrition and Food Service program offers two majors for students interested in the culinary arts. These majors are nutrition and wellness and food service/culinary arts. You can choose a major depending on your interest. Both are four semesters, and include theory and hands-on classes in food preparation, science and safety, and wellness and community nutrition.


Courses Required


Aside from the general education requirements, the required courses you have to take in both majors are nutrition and food service, managing food protection, diabetes and mother earth, food science cooking skills, quantity food production, fundamentals of nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition through the life cycle, management of food service operations and food service practicum I or II. Additionally, you have to take culinary calculations and culinary fundamentals in the food service/culinary arts program.


Learner Outcomes


Upon completion of the nutrition and food service program, you'll be able to demonstrate basic cooking techniques and culinary skills, manage a working food production environment, apply food safety and sanitation principles, manage food service systems, complete the Certified Dietary Manager exam and professionally support the needs of your employer. Additionally, completion of the food service/culinary arts program will enable you to understand the relationship between culinary skills and healthy nutrition. Furthermore, completion of the nutrition/wellness program will enable you to provide nutrition education, promote the kinds of foods that meet individuals' and groups' nutritional needs and to pursue a degree in nutrition or dietetics.


Careers


After graduating from the course in Nutrition and Food Service, you can earn a ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification to become a certified dietary manager. You'll have the necessary training that you'll need to work in different fields such as schools, wellness programs, a Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), elder-care food service, restaurants, catering companies, kitchens in a hotel or casino. The program also allows you to pursue advanced training to become a dietitian or a chef.
