List Of A Housekeeper'S Duties

Housekeepers change beds regularly in settings such as hotels.

Housekeepers perform a number of duties that can be important to the overall organization and maintenance of a busy household. Some people employ housekeepers because their busy schedules prevent them from performing some basic housekeeping duties themselves. Payscale.com says the average housekeeper can expect to make about $8.37 to $11.15 per hour, as of October 2010.

Cleaning Duties

Housekeepers in homes, hotels and other establishments perform a variety of cleaning duties. These can include light-duty tasks such as dusting and vacuuming or more involved tasks such as scrubbing tubs and toilets or scrubbing wood or tile floors. Many of the cleaning duties completed by housekeepers are recurring duties that are completed daily or weekly and simply involve maintenance of the current level of cleaning.

Cleaning duties can vary by employer. For instance, housekeepers working for a family may wash dishes daily, whereas hotel housekeepers may never complete that task as part of their duties.

Cooking and Kitchen Duties

Some housekeepers may take on a more elaborate role in the household. They may be hired not only to clean, but also to maintain the kitchen. Aside from washing dishes and other cleaning, kitchen duties may include the planning and preparation of meals. This might necessitate grocery shopping as well.

Some employers entrust their housekeepers with the budget to keep the kitchen stocked. Some housekeepers may cook only one meal per day; others may make as many as three.

Laundry Duties

Laundry is a regular aspect of housekeeping duties for both domestic housekeepers and those working in hotels or hospitals. Laundry duties can include washing, drying and folding clothes. They can also include putting clothes away and ironing.

Changing the linens in bedrooms is a daily duty performed by housekeepers in hospitals and hotels. Housekeepers are usually required to change sheets, covers, pillows and pillowcases. This may also be required of domestic housekeepers, but usually less frequently.
