Make Atole Cereal

Make atole easily at home

Atole is a traditional Mexican dish that is made from cornmeal, cornstarch, or masa harina. It has a thick, smooth, porridge-like consistency and can be served hot or cold. It is typically consumed at breakfast like Cream of Wheat or oatmeal. Atole can be sweetened and flavored with sugar, honey, fruit, vanilla, or cinnamon. There's even a chocolate version of atole called champurrado, and it is extremely popular. Try this easy recipe. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Whisk the milk or water and masa harina together in a bowl until smooth. For better results, place the mixture into a blender and blend until there are no lumps.

2. Transfer the mixture to a medium-sized saucepan. Slowly bring to a low boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.

3. Reduce heat to low and continue cooking for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring constantly, until the cereal thickens.

4. Slowly pour in sugar while stirring. Continue to stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Add vanilla.

5. Remove from heat and serve hot in mugs. Optional: sprinkle with cinnamon.
