Instructions

1. Plan your menus. This may be the most important tip when it comes to feeding your family on a budget. Write out your menu plan, making sure to utilize every last bit of food.

2. Study the grocery store ads. You can get some great deals when you buy the "loss leaders." These are the items supermarkets sell for unbelievable prices just to get you in the door. They're betting that once in, you'll spend lots. Loss leaders are usually advertised on the front page of the grocery flyers.

3. Combine coupons with sale items whenever possible. You can get super deals when you do this. But don't buy something just because you have a coupon for it. also, check the store brands, because they may be cheaper even when you use the coupon for the well-known brand.

4. Cook everything from scratch. You can't buy convenience food when you only have $20 to spend.

5. Enjoy a few meatless meals. Fresh veggies are delicious. Third World countries know the nutritional value of combining two incomplete proteins, such as rice and beans, to make a complete protein.

6. Use all your leftovers to feed your family on little money. If you roast a chicken, boil the carcass for chicken soup. Include a few carrots, some onions and a couple of stalks of celery. Serve over any kind of pasta. Even if you just have a small amount of a dish left, save it, and at the end of the week, put out all the leftovers for a creative buffet.
