Instructions

1. Plan your garden. It is important to properly plan your garden before you begin planting. Survey your available space and create a sketch of the area on a sheet of paper. Read the instructions that came with your seeds to determine how much space you will need. Sketch a blueprint of your garden on the paper.

2. Prepare the soil for planting. Use your shovel to rotate the soil. Take care to rotate the soil to 18 inches deep. Add the compost material to the top of the soil until you have a four to six inch layer. Let it sit for a few days, then use the shovel to rotate it into the soil again. Fruits and vegetables may need different types of soil to grow well. Read the information on your seed packets to know what kind of soil your fruits and vegetables require.

3. Plant your seeds. Use the tape measure to ensure proper spacing. Using your map as a guide, plant your vegetable seeds in the soil. Use the shovel to place the surrounding soil on top of the seeds.

4. Take care of the garden. Water the soil at least once per week. To control weeds, cultivate the soil by hand-pulling weeds. For larger gardens, use a hoe to rotate the soil.

5. Harvest your fruits and vegetables. Raise them according to the amount you need.
