Summer Cooking Camps For Teens

Culinary camps provide intensive study of cooking techniques.

A summer professional camp is a good way for teenagers to gain experience in a trade and help determine if a certain career path is right for them. Day culinary camps are held at universities, culinary institutes and cooking schools around the country. A select few have overnight programs where teenagers have an intensive study experience and a crash course in the culinary arts.

Campus NYC

Campus NYC (campusnyc.org) is an advanced experiential camp for teens held in New York City. One of the camp's programs is Culinary NYC. The culinary camp is held for two weeks in July and gives aspiring teenage chefs the opportunity to work with and learn from leaders in the culinary industry. The camp includes visits to top restaurants, cooking classes in an industrial teaching kitchen, food tours of New York restaurants and workshops and lectures from restaurant owners and food critics. The students stay in a fully furnished residence on the upper east side of Manhattan with 24 hour security and live-in residential advisers.

Exploration Focus

Exploration (explo.org) offers a two-week cooking camp in Boston, Massachusetts. Campers study under an executive chef and restaurant owner to learn the essentials of the culinary arts. The classes focus on basic skills like cutting techniques, flavor pairing, presentation and food chemistry. Campers study in a commercial kitchen on a college campus, stay in a college dormitory on the Wellesley College campus and are supervised by live-in staff.

North Dakota State College of Science

North Dakota State College of Science (ndscs.nodak.edu) in Wahpeton, North Dakota, offers a four-day intensive culinary camp for teenagers 16 and older. The classes take place in the teaching kitchen of the college's culinary arts program and expose students to the culinary basics. The classes focus on knife skills, garnishing, buffet presentation and students learn to make soups, breads, salad dressing, meat entrees and desserts. The camp also offers free accommodation in the college's residence hall and free meals in the campus dining hall.

Kendall College

Kendall College (culinary.kendall.edu) in Chicago, Illinois, offers one-, two- and three-week camps for aspiring cooks. The camp is held in the school's commercial teaching kitchens and campers choose between culinary, baking and pastry specializations. The classes teach knife skills, fine dining, culinary skills, baking, chocolate and regional cuisine. Campers stay at the school's residence hall and participate in supervised social activities in the Chicago area.
