Make Soap From Scratch Without Lye

Avoid using lye to make soap by making it with a melt and pour soap base.

Lye can pose many dangers to your health because it can burn your skin and it can irritate your lungs. If you do not want to use lye when making soap, you can instead make it with a melt and pour glycerin soap base. You can make soap safely with melt and pour soap so you can engage your children in the soap-making process. Making your own glycerin soap will save you money, and you can customize soap with fragrances, dyes and other additives.

Instructions

1. Cut the glycerin soap base into small pieces no larger than 1 inch. Place the glycerin soap into a glass measuring cup and set it in the microwave. Microwave the soap for 30 seconds and then stir it. Continue to microwave the soap for 15-second intervals until it melts completely.

2. Add 2 tsp. of fragrance oil for each pound of melted glycerin soap. Stir the fragrance oil into the soap to mix it well.

3. Add soap dye slowly to the glycerin soap. Stir the soap while you add the dye until you reach the desired color.

4. Pour the melted soap into a soap mold. Cover the soap mold with a washcloth or dishtowel. Allow the soap to cool for 24 hours.

5. Remove the soap from the mold. Cut the soap into bars if you poured it into a large mold.

6. Cure the glycerin soap for two to three days by placing it on a drying rack. Glycerin soap does not need to cure as long as soap made with lye, but it does need curing to ensure that it hardens completely.
