Can Tomato Sauce That Is Made At Home

Can your homemade tomato sauce to give as a gift or sell.

Canning your own tomato sauce allows you to have high quality sauce available without worrying about the ingredients that are in your food. Canning allows you to cater to any dietary restrictions and still have the foods you love. Once completed, the canned tomato sauce can also be used for gifts or can be sold for profit. Jars can be decorated with printed labels, ribbons, gift tags or squares of fabric for gifting or sale purposes. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Prepare your tomato sauce recipe. Once done, remove the pot from the hot burner and set aside.

2. Sanitize the canning jars by boiling them for 10 minutes in water deep enough to cover them completely. Boil the rims to sanitize, if desired. Do not boil the lids, simply wash them in cool, soapy water. Once the jars are sanitized, remove them to a cooling rack so any excess water can drip out. The jars should be placed mouth side down for drainage.

3. Fill the jars with your sauce, allowing for one inch of head space, which is the distance between the top of the sauce and the top of the jar. Remove any bubbles from the sauce using a non-metallic spatula. Insert the spatula and turn the jar while moving the spatula up and down. Once the bubbles are removed, wipe the rims of the jar to remove any splatters or extra sauce. Place a lid on the jar followed by a rim. Turn the rim until finger tight. Finger tight means that you turned the rim with only your fingers and did not apply significant pressure to tighten.

4. Place the filled jars in your canner. Fill the canner with water according to the canner's instructions. The amount of water needed will be different depending on whether you are using a water canner or a pressure canner. Process the jars according to size, altitude and canner type. For example, using a water canner with pint size jars, the recipe would need to process for 30 minutes.

5. Allow the jars to cool completely after processing. This can take between 12 and 24 hours. Test the jars for proper sealing by pressing on the center of the lid. The lid should be concave and should not move. Label the jars with contents and date prepared for future reference, and decorate lids with squares of fabric if desired.
