Healthy Icing For Cake Decorating

Pink icing

Many conventional icing recipes call for ingredients that are made with chemicals and additives. There are many ways to replace these ingredients with natural and/or organic ingredients to make healthy icings that also taste great. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Organic Sugar

You can replace refined white sugar with organic sugar in your icing recipe for a healthier cake topping. Organic sugars are less processed than their refined counterparts and do not have any chemical additives such as sucralose. While organic sugar commonly has a natural, caramel-brown color, there are many organic "white" sugars available as well. These are great for icing recipes where retaining a certain coloring is important.

Healthy Sugar Substitutes

Many sugar substitutes are laden with additives and chemicals, but healthy products such as Stevia can easily be incorporated into many of your favorite icing recipes. Stevia is a herb that grows naturally in parts of South America, and has 300 times the sweetness of cane sugar.

Plant-Based Food Dyes

Incorporating plant-based food dyes into your icing versus conventional food dyes makes for a healthier icing. Plant-based food dyes, which are derived from fruits and vegetables, are chemical-free and often naturally full of antioxidants.

Natural Flavors

While products such as imitation vanilla extract are widely used in icing recipes, natural juices and extracts can make for great tasting, chemical-free substitutes.
