Start A Candy Business

Are you known for whipping up tasty treats? Do co-workers, family or friends gush about how delicious your goodies are? Are you ready to take your hobby to the next level? If your culinary skills are reeling in the compliments, it may be time to start your own candy business. The candy business can be extremely lucrative for a committed entrepreneur with an imaginative palette. With any food service business, there are a number of regulations that must be addressed. However, don't let these discourage you.

Instructions

1. Contact your local health department about the food regulations and permits for your city. Food that is sold to the public must be made in a licensed kitchen. You may be able to get your kitchen licensed for a fee. However, it may be easier just to purchase a storefront that includes one. You will need a sales tax permit and a food service or handler license.

2. Register your business. Create a catchy name and logo for your candy company. Purchase business cards and candy bags with your company name and logo on them. If you decide to purchase a storefront and intend to hire employees, you will need to incorporate your business and apply for a federal tax identification number. Incorporating your business (as with an LLC) will offer liability protection that you wouldn't have if you operated as a sole proprietor. It's still a good idea to purchase product liability insurance. This will protect you from consumer complaints or lawsuits related to your candy.

3. Separate yourself from other candy businesses in your area. In order to break into the market, you must offer customers a reason to want to check you out. Create a business plan that identifies how you intend to stand apart from the competition. Consider how you will design and package your candy so that it is unique.

4. Purchase your candy supplies. These may include molds, trays, cellophane, bags, ribbons, ties, labels, boxes and ingredients. Visit Sugarcraft.com for an extensive list of candy supplies (see link below). For heavy-duty equipment such as ovens, refrigerators, heavy-duty mixers, shelving and display cases, visit Empirebake.com. Call (800) 878-4070 or see link below.

5. Make your candy. Create samples to place on your store counter or to take with you to craft fairs, fairs, trade shows, home parties, fundraisers and schools.

6. Promote your store. Offer 10% off or Buy 1 Get 1 Free coupons. Consider opening a website. Take clear photos of your best candy creations and post them on your website. Drop business cards off at colleges and other free community boards. List your business in local directories and on Google Maps.
