Create My Own Pillows

Update your furniture with custom pillows.


Change the look of your upholstery or bedding with custom throw and accent pillows. Sew pillows of any size or shape in the same basic way to quickly update the look of your furniture. Remember to center your fabric's pattern in the center of the pillow before cutting the fabric. Use the same fabric for the front and back of the pillow, or use a solid color for the back and a printed fabric for the front. Once you master the basic technique and understand the steps, you can create easily create custom pillows. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Cut the fabric into two pieces one inch larger than the desired finished pillow size.


2. Turn the fabric over so that the printed side faces down and place a standard drinking glass on the corner so that the sides of the glass touch the sides of corner.


3. Trace the glass with a pencil to form a rounded corner and repeat on each corner.


4. Cut each of the corners following the pencil outline creating a slightly rounded corner.


5. Sew a zigzag stitch using the zigzag pre-set on your sewing machine along all the unfinished edges to prevent fraying of the fabric.


6. Line the outside edges of one piece of fabric with decorative trim. Lay the trim on the printed side of the fabric with the sewing edge of the trim meeting the outside edge of the fabric. Pin the trim in place carefully without stretching the fabric or trim.


7. Lay the pieces of fabric side by side with the printed sides facing down. Sew a zipper onto the edges of the fabric connecting the pieces together.


8. Unzip the zipper and fold one piece of fabric over the other with the printed sides of the fabric facing the inside. Pin the pieces together on three sides being careful not to pull or stretch the fabric.


9. Sew the edges together removing the pins as you work your way around the pillow. Sew the three sides of the pillow together to meet the zipper.


10. Pull the pillow through the zipper turning it right side out.


11. Fill the pillow with foam, cotton stuffing, a pillow insert or feathers to the desired fullness and zip the zipper.
