Safely Dispose Of Fertilizers

Safely Dispose of Fertilizers

The fertilizer industry is a profitable one that made more than $10 billion in annual revenue in 2008. It has also created more than 33,000 U.S. jobs. At one point or another, we have all used some sort of fertilizer, whether organic or not, in our gardens. Most Americans do not use up an entire package of fertilizer in one season. They often dump it down a storm drain or flush it down a toilet. Disposing of fertilizers this way will inevitably pollute our water supply. Follow these steps to safely dispose of your fertilizers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Call your neighbors and relatives to see if they can use your leftover fertilizer.

2. Call your local household hazardous waste facility and ask how and when you can dispose of your fertilizer.

3. If you do not have anyone who can use your fertilizer or a household hazardous waste facility, you will have to throw away the fertilizer. Double bag dry fertilizer in trash bags and tie the bags shut. Throw away on your next trash day.

4. Wrap bottles of liquid fertilizer in three layers of newspaper. Double bag the wrapped fertilizer in trash bags. Tie shut. Throw away on your next trash day.
