Use Himalayan Salt

Himalayan salt provides a gourmet indulgence for those who want to look beyond the plain table salt common in most homes. The salt almost always has a pale pink color, caused by trace minerals. A high-quality salt, it has not been processed or treated with additives. Whether you are interested in Himalayan salt for its color, flavor profile, or health benefits, there are a number ways to use this type of salt. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Break up the salt into fine grains. If you have purchased a large block, you will need to break it into coarse chunks with a mortar and pestle or mallet. If you have purchased the salt in coarse chunks, you can further break down the product in a salt grinder or spice mill. Sprinkle the salt on food as you would with table salt.

2. Coat a cleaned, whole fish with the salt. Place the fish on a bed of salt, cover with more salt, and then bake at 450 degrees Fahrenheit for half an hour. The salt will help the fish retain moisture and impart flavor.

3. Smoke the Himalayan salt crystals over wood chips to create a gourmet smoked salt. As the smoke rises from your wood chips, hold a fine mesh splatter guard over the smoke, and place the salt on the mesh. Allow the smoke to penetrate the salt for 45 to 60 minutes.

4. Soak in a tub with Himalayan salt crystals, or use the salt as an exfoliant by combining it with your favorite mud masque or other spa treatment.
