What Do Food Stamps Cover

Food stamps is an assistance program for low-income families to help them put food on the table. There is a specific list of things covered by food stamps, as some things are not covered. Here are some more details.

Name Change

The Food Stamp Program is now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is the national name, but each state may call this program differently.

Eligible Foods

The foods eligible for purchase with SNAP certificates are bread, cereals, fruits, vegetables, proteins and dairy products.

Seeds and Plants

Seeds and plants that will be grown to supplement a family's meals are also covered.

Restaurants

In some states, restaurants may be authorized to accept food stamps from eligible homeless, elderly or disabled people. The food stamps must purchase a low-cost meal.

Not Allowed

Some things that cannot be bought with food stamps are alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, vitamins, medicine, non-food items and pet food.
