A Survival List Of Foodstuffs

Store grains and rice for long-term survival situations.

Being prepared for an emergency is vital to survival. Ready.gov suggests having at least three days worth of water, food and other supplies in case of emergency. Whether your emergency plans cover only a few days or more than a year there are a few basic items you will need for survival.

Canned Food

Have plenty of ready-to-eat food available. Keep canned meats like tuna, salmon and chicken, as well as fruits and vegetables, on hand. Have a can opener stored away also.

Dried foods

Dried foods keep for long periods of time and are either ready to eat or prepared vary quickly. Survival foods include oatmeal, cereal, fruits, nuts and crackers. Keep these items tightly sealed so they don't go stale.

Short Term Essentials

Other foods may come in handy when preparing for short-term survival. Peanut butter and energy bars can provide a needed boost. Canned soups can make quick and easy meals. Store some canned juices and non-perishable canned milk. Have some of your favorite snacks stored that may help you through stressful situations.

Long Term Survival

Long-term survival requires more items and more planning beforehand. Things to store for long term survival include wheat, rice, sugar, flour, baking powder and soda, and dried beans. Items like powdered milk, honey, syrup and spices can help add to what may be a bland diet during long-term survival.

Nature

Learn what plants in your area are edible. Learn fish, hunt and trap to add to the list of items that are on your dinner menu.

Water

Have plenty of water on hand. Store plastic bottles of water for short-term use. For longer survival, have containers available that you can use to collect water as well as pots to boil the water or purification tablets.
