Dog Food Storage Ideas

Storing your dog food well allows you to buy in bulk without fearing waste from spoilage.

That 50 pound bag of dog food might have seemed like a good idea when you were at the wholesale club, but unless you own several dogs and can run through a huge amount of food in a short space of time, you'll need to find adequate storage to make the most out of your bulk purchase. Good dog food storage should be dog- and moisture-proof, helping to preserve the food's flavor and texture. Does this Spark an idea?

Pet Food Storage Bins

Several companies make bins designed specifically for the storage of pet food. These bins offer features such as locking doors to keep out inquisitive and hungry pets, premeasured scoops and easy use designs. They come in a variety of materials ranging from heavy, chew-proof rubber to slick stainless steel and aluminum.

The pros to these bins are that they are designed to blend in with your kitchen or home; unfortunately, they are a pricey solution to the pet food storage problem. They are also smaller than some of the alternative solutions and may only hold a small amount of your dog's food at a time, making them impractical for the bulk buyer.

Rubber Containers and Tubs

Rubber containers can be purchased cheaply at a general goods store. These bins are more commonly used for storing personal effects, but the waterproof nature of the construction make them perfect for storing large amounts of dog food. Some of these containers are manufactured by the same companies that produce specialized pet food bins but are a fraction of the cost.

These bins have an advantage in price, but you'll need to take care that these are secured against your pets -- they do not have locking features presented by specifically designed bins, and a truly industrious dog may even be able to chew through the plastic.

Garbage Containers

Both rubberized and metal garbage containers have the capacity to hold even the largest bag of dog food. Metal garbage containers present a chew-proof solution for dog food storage. These containers are quite large, so they're best used in an area where you have ample storage and access, such as a garage or shed.

Using a garbage bin for your dog's food storage allows you to store a lot of food at once, however, you'll need to make sure the lid is secure against pets and, if kept outside, wild animals. Many garbage containers come with predrilled holes for adding security solutions such as locks and bungee cords, making this an ideal solution for large dog food purchases.
