Grind Corn Meal

Grinding corn is easier than it was in the old days.

Modern health guides tell us that buying foods that are largely unprocessed and unrefined can improve the nutritional value of what we eat. Grinding your own grain corn into cornmeal brings you a step closer to the natural, whole foods you'd like to be eating. Get all of the natural nutrients of the grain by grinding the corn yourself instead of buying processed cornmeal that contains additives and preservatives. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Obtain grain corn from a local farm, health food store or farmers' market.

2. Purchase a manual corn mill or an electric grinder. Mother Earth News recommends a Whisper Hill electric grinder for fine grinding.

3. Add the dry grain corn to the mill, making sure not to exceed the mill's capacity.

4. Secure the manual mill in place. Grab the handle and spin the nob around for at least five minutes to crush the grain into a course cornmeal. This will take some upper-body strength and continuous arm movement to accomplish properly.

5. Select a level of courseness on an electric mill. This ranges anywhere from course grits to fine cornmeal mush or corn flour. Push the button to grind the corn.
