Organic Survival Foods

Organic food has fewer chemicals and preservatives, and when properly packaged is good for survival planning.

It's important that you have survival food as a part of any emergency plan. You may not have access to a grocery store when disaster strikes, so it's best to keep canned and dried food on hand in case you really need it. It's also a good idea to make sure the food you have for survival purposes is properly packaged, and that as often as possible it is organic. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Meat

Organic meat has many fewer chemicals and preservatives than non-organic meat, including the food that is fed to animals before they're slaughtered. Unfortunately, organic meat will spoil if it isn't packaged properly. The best way to keep organic meat ready for an emergency is to buy it in cans. This is true for most survival foods. Canning helps extend the shelf life of food so you can stock up in advance. Check the expiration dates, however, and make sure that you replace any meat that is past its expiration.

Spices

Canned food (especially meat and vegetables) may seem bland or unappetizing at first. For this reason it's a good idea to keep spices on hand for cooking. After all, just because you have survival kit food doesn't mean you can't also make it tasty as well as nourishing. It's also a good idea to buy organic spices, which can be bought in plastic packages or in cans to make them last longer. It's important that the spices as well as the food be organic. If you put all the effort into getting organic food and then put spices with chemical preservatives and additives on the food, it defeats the purpose.

Butter and Honey

Although not everyone uses them, it's a good idea to include organic butter and honey in your organic survival food kit. Butter has a variety of cooking uses and can be used for simple breakfasts of toast if there's available bread. Honey may be used as a substitute for sugar in sweetening many things, including tea, toast and other foods. By purchasing organic versions of these items (which come in small tubs, jars or cans), you can keep your meals as organic as possible.
