What Is Spelt Flour

You can make spelt flour at home with a grain miller.

Spelt flour is a flour that's made from spelt grain. The flour is popular with people who are sensitive to wheat products. Although spelt is distantly related to the wheat grain family, people who are sensitive to it can usually tolerate food made with spelt. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Types

There are two types of spelt flour: light and whole. Light spelt flour is similar to white flour in the sense that it has been processed, which removes a lot of its nutrients. Whole spelt flour -- like the name indicates -- is unprocessed flour, and its nutrients are left intact.

Uses

You can use both types of spelt flour in cooking and baking, just like other whole grain and white flours. Some foods you can make with spelt flour include bread, cookies, pasta, pizza dough, rolls and waffles.

Homemade

You can make spelt flour at home. All that you need is spelt grain -- also known as spelt berries -- and a grain mill to grind it into flour. If you don't want to use a manual grain mill that is cranked by hand, you can grind the flour with an electric mill.
