Cook Hardboiled Eggs To Perfection

Cooking a hard-boiled egg only takes about 12 minutes.

The key to hard boiling an egg is all in the timing - and the timing is the same whether you are boiling one egg or a dozen. Cooking eggs for the right amount of time without getting them too hot helps to prevent that greenish ring on the yolks - even though it's harmless, it just doesn't look appetizing. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Remove eggs from the carton and arrange in a pot or pan in a single layer.

2. Fill the pot with cool water from the tap. The water should be about 1 inch higher than the eggs. To test this, dip your index finger in the water, resting on an egg. The first bend in the index finger is about an inch, so if the water level comes up to the first bend, you're good to go.

3. Place the pot on the stove and turn on the burner to medium-high.

4. Bring water to a boil and immediately turn off the burner and cover the pot with a lid, or a plate if you don't have a lid to fit the pot. Let the pot stay on the burner for 12 minutes.

5. Transfer the eggs to the ice water. Leave them in the ice water for about two minutes. Use eggs or store in refrigerator.
