Know What You Can Buy With Food Stamps

SNAP benefits are now distributed through electronic cards.

The federal food stamp program was established in 1964. In 2008 Congress passed the Food Conservation and Energy Act and changed the program's name to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Households must pass resource and income tests to receive SNAP benefits, which are distributed monthly through an electronic card that is similar to a debit card. Your card can be used only to buy certain types of food items. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which administers SNAP, offers several resources to help you determine what you can buy with your benefit.

Instructions

1. Access the USDA's SNAP Retail Locator o find SNAP-eligible retailers in your area. Click the "Select Location" button in the upper-right corner of the map, enter your address and click "Locate Retailers."

2. Review the guidelines regarding what food items are eligible to be purchased with SNAP benefits. In general, all foods, seeds and plants intended for household use are eligible for purchase. Items including beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes and tobacco; nonfood items such as pet food or household supplies; vitamins and medicines; food meant to be eaten in the store and hot foods are not eligible.

3. Refer to USDA guidelines for particular generic items. Some items, such as bows and arrows, can only be purchased with SNAP benefits in specific areas.

4. If you are still unsure if an item can be purchased with SNAP benefits, ask an employee at a SNAP-eligible retailer. Retailers typically maintain guidance regarding product-specific SNAP eligibility.
