Tell If A Chicken'S Egg Is Spoiled

Your egg's freshness depends on the amount of air inside the shell.

A number of quick and easy ways can tell you how fresh your chicken's egg is. While it is important to know how fresh your egg is, just because an egg is older doesn't mean it's spoiled. Less fresh eggs are still perfectly good for using in cake mixes, sauces or omelets, though they have a noticeably different consistency if you poach or fry them. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Hold the egg in your hand and smell it. If it is bad, it feels unnaturally light and smell terrible.

2. Lower the egg into a fairly deep bowl of water. If the egg sinks quickly to the bottom and lies on its side, it is fresh. If the egg floats, it is spoiled.

3. Crack the egg on a plate. If the yoke is very flat or breaks easily, or if the egg white is transparent, the egg is not very fresh. As long as it doesn't smell strongly, though, it should still be edible.
