Things To See And Do In Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is a fishing village located in Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. This port is small--with a population of roughly 30,000-- but it is a popular tourist destination because of its beaches that are popular with the surfing crowd. Some places to go in Puerto Escondido are the Playa Principal, Playa Carrizalillo--with its breath-taking cove--and Playa Zicatela for sunbathing and mingling with the hip crowd. Mercado Benito Juarez, Andador Escenico Sea Walk and Finca Las Nieves are also worth the visit.

Beaches

The two main beaches in Puerto Escondido are the Playa Principal, or main beach, and Zicatela. They are good spots for surfing and swimming, but people can rent boats at Playa Principal to visit secluded beaches and view El Morro, the rock formation that separates Playa Zicatela from other beaches. You can take a boat out early in the morning or at sunset to watch dolphins and turtles or go for a deep-sea fishing expedition.

Carrizalillo Cove

Carrizalillo Cove features emerald green waters and cliffs, featuring food and beverage service nearby. The reef breaks in the cove provide a good place for surfing, swimming and snorkeling.

Market

Mercado Benito Juarez is one of the newer markets in Oaxaca, held everyday on an entire city block. The market fare includes fresh fruits and vegetables, chayote squash, fish, tortillas and cheese as well as other items such as flowers, incense and shoes. Try their tamales, sopes and many other items of the legendary Oaxacan cuisine.

Sea Walk

Andador Escenico Sea Walk is a walkway that starts at the Playa Principal and goes up to rocky ocean-side cliffs. This mile-long walkway goes along shores that are below a lighthouse and features a bridge over the seawater of the Playa Principal.

Finca Las Nieves

Finca Las Nieves is a cloud forest where one can walk on a number of hiking trails around a mountain canyon. In this forest, coffee has been produced in organic coffee farms for more than a hundred years.
