Substitute Natural Sweetners For Sugar In Recipes

Sugar cane isn't the only source of sweetener.

Sugar is a necessary ingredient in many recipes for its sweetness and its ability to liquefy and caramelize at high temperatures, making the finished dish or baked good tender and moist. However, if you want to use less refined sugar and substitute it with other natural sweeteners it isn't as easy as changing out equal measurements. To substitute natural sweeteners for sugar in recipes, you need to know which natural sweetener you want to use and, if the natural sweetener is a liquid, know how much liquid to cut out of the rest of the recipe. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Replace each cup of sugar with 3/4 cup of maple syrup to make a slightly less sweet dish, but one that is more flavorful than using sugar. Because syrup is already a liquid, cut back any liquids in the recipe by 3 tbsp.

2. Exchange honey for sugar by using 3/4 cup plus 1 tbsp. of honey for every 1 cup of sugar the recipe calls for and reduce liquids by 2 tbsp.. If buttermilk or sour cream are not used in the recipe, then incorporate a pinch of baking soda into the mix to counter acidity.

3. Substitute up to half of the sugar in a dish with molasses by using 1 1/3 cup of molasses per cup of sugar. Cut back any liquid ingredients by 5 tbsp. and add an additional ½ tsp. of baking soda for every 1 cup of molasses you used.

4. Swap 2/3 cup of refined fructose for each cup of sugar normally used in a recipe. Expect baked items to turn out darker when you use refined fructose as well as more moist.

5. Add fruity flavors to a beloved dish by replacing each cup of sugar needed with 3/4 cup of any juice concentrate. Limit the other liquids needed by 3 tbsp. to accommodate the liquid of the juice concentrate.

6. Utilize brown rice malt syrup as a substitute by matching each 1 cup of sugar required with 1 cup of brown rice malt syrup. Reduce any of the liquid ingredients by ¼ cup for every cup of rice syrup you end up using.
