Spikenard Oil Uses

Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) is an herb of the valerian family. Spikenard essential oil is steam distilled from the roots of the plant. The ancient Egyptians and Romans made spikenard into an ointment, which the New Testament reports that Mary Magdalene used to anoint the feet of Christ at the Last Supper. Modern spikenard oil uses include medicinal, skin care and emotional.

Medicinal Uses

According to the "Essential Oils Desk Reference," the medicinal properties of spikenard oil are that it helps fight bacteria, fungus and inflammation, and it is relaxing and helps stimulate the immune system. Spikenard's antifungal properties may help get rid of athlete's foot and toenail fungus.

"Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art" reports that spikenard is considered a nerve and liver tonic and may be helpful for nervous indigestion, insomnia, headaches and heart palpitations. To help you sleep, you can diffuse spikenard essential oil or place one to three drops of the oil on a cotton ball or tissue and inhale for a minimum of 30 to 60 seconds.

Spikenard oil may be useful for balancing hormones in both women and men. According to aromatherapist K.G. Stiles, spikenard is especially useful during onset of puberty and for menopausal issues in women.

Skin Care Uses

Spikenard essential oil also helps nourish and regenerate the skin through stimulating circulation of blood, lymph and nerve supply. According to "Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art," spikenard is good for all skin and hair types but especially effective for dry or mature skin.

Spikenard oil uses for skin care include relief of scalp irritation, skin inflammation, rashes and psoriasis. Dilute spikenard essential oil in a carrier oil and apply to skin. Patch test first to make sure you are not sensitive to the oil.

Emotional Uses

Spikenard is relaxing and relieves emotional tension. Diffusing spikenard is useful for meditation. K.G. Stiles reports that spikenard oil lifts your spirits and inspires your heart and mind to selfless acts of devotion and quiet inner peace. According to "The Fragrant Heavens," the emotional healing effects of spikenard essential oil are to encourage forgiveness, fearlessness, balance and resolution.

Cautions

Do not use spikenard if you are pregnant. No other contraindications for spikenard oil are reported; however, consult a professional healthcare provider if you have a medical condition. Also, seek out high-quality essential oils, as cheap, synthetic copies of oils are less likely to be effective and more likely to cause side effects.
