Fresh vegetables and fruits are eligible for purchase with food stamps.
The Department of Agriculture oversees the administration of a program called SNAP, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The SNAP program provides electronic benefits --food stamps-- to lower income households and other specific groups of people to supplement their food budget. Any household that meets the requirement guidelines has the right to apply for the food stamp program at the local SNAP office. The local office determines the amount of food stamps allotted to each household based on a set of requirements and validation of information provided by the applicant.
Edible Food Products
All food products produced for human consumption are eligible for purchase at the grocery store with food stamps. Included in this list are fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, cereals and other whole-grain items. The list also includes meats, fish, poultry and dairy products. Bottled soft drinks, snacks, and candy may also be purchased, but not alcohol or tobacco products of any kind.
Plants and Trees
Vegetable plants, seeds and fruit trees which produce edible crops for the household are eligible for purchase with food stamps.
Special Circumstances
There are circumstances where qualified homeless people, the disabled and senior citizens may use their SNAP benefits at local restaurants. Although the benefits can never be exchanged for actual currency, the food stamps do provide payment for low cost meals.
Other Products
Certain areas, like rural Alaska, allow the purchase of bows and arrows with food stamps. This is not for all areas; check with your local SNAP office to determine eligibility.
Processed foods--like sandwiches and salads prepared for off-premises eating--are also eligible for purchase with food stamps only from a grocer, not a restaurant.
