Ways To Eat Coconut Juice

Coconut juice comes from young, green coconuts.

You may have recently heard or read about the health benefits of drinking the juice from young, green coconuts. This juice, called coconut water, differs from coconut milk in that it contains none of the fatty flesh of the coconut. Coconut juice is low in calories and contains electrolytes, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Coconut juice is not only good to drink, but can also be used in cooking. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Use it as a Substitute for Milk

Coconut juice can be used as a delicious substitute for milk in many situations and recipes. Coconut juice is a boon to people who are vegan or lactose intolerant. Because coconut juice is slightly denser than other fruit juices and it has a mild, creamy, lightly sweet and nutty flavor, it makes an excellent alternative to milk. You can eat your cereal with coconut juice. You can add coconut juice to your coffee and leave out both the milk and the sugar. You can even use coconut juice as a substitute for milk in many baked goods, including cakes and cookies.

Steam Your Rice in it

Rice that is steamed in coconut juice makes a tasty accompaniment to Indian and Southeast Asian dishes, many of which are actually cooked in coconut milk. Coconut juice imparts a nutty flavor to your rice that is ever so lightly sweet. Rice steamed in coconut juice is excellent for making very spicy dishes more palatable to diners who can't handle heat. To steam your rice in coconut juice, replace two-thirds of the water you would normally cook your rice in with coconut juice. If you want to make your rice especially flavorful, steam it entirely in coconut milk and add a stick of lemongrass.

Add it to Soups

Coconut juice also makes an excellent addition to Indian, Goan, Sri Lankan, African and Thai soups, some of which are prepared with coconut juice in their countries of origin. Adding coconut juice to your soups imparts all of the same health benefits to your food that you get from drinking coconut juice fresh. Coconut juice can make very spicy soups milder for more sensitive palates. Coconut juice should be added to your soups as a substitute for water, or at the same point in your recipe that you are adding broth. It complements curried flavors particularly well.
